B&w photograph frontispiece portrait of the author. Fawn cloth, titled in gilt on spine, titled & illustrated in black on upper board. Cloth stained and slightly frayed, inner hinges tender. A good copy only. Not specifically angling, but Rees never misses an opportunity to mention the sport. In the section, "Bird Life In A Western Valley," (the author lived in Llandysul, Ceredigion), the birds covered are the kingfisher, the heron, the dipper and the partridge. The Memoir by J.K. Hudson, Rees's literary executor and compiler of this volume, begins, "Thomas Alfred Wesley Rees, the "Alfred Wellesley Rees" of Ianto The Fisherman and Creatures Of The Night, was born December 7th, 1872, at Pembroke Dock. His father. was an unpaid preacher among the Wesleyans." For his pen-name Rees, who later took orders in the Church of England, dropped the name of the great Methodist preacher and replaced it with that of the Duke of Wellington. . …

By the very title the nineteen-year-old poet conjures up the vision of the two countries dear to all Romantics. While much in the volume appears to be typically Romantic, the poems already indicate something of Musset?s departure from the main stream of Romanticism and reflect an irony that appeals to modern readers. In her introduction and notes the editor demonstrates both the pleasure that can still be derived from the poems? exuberance, the amusement that the excesses of Romanticism arouse at the present time, and the sense of wonder as one watches the development of the poet?s individual style.
