London: Robert Redman, 1526. (illustrator). London: Robert Redman, 1526. A Very Early Quarto-Edition Year Book, One of Two Known Copies [Year Books]. Edward IV [1442-1483], King of England. De Termino Michaelis Anno xv.E.iiii. [London: Witwout [sic] Tempull Barre in Sent Clemantis Paryshe by me Robert Redman at Syne of the George. Cum Privilegio a Rege Indulto, (1526?)]. xxvi [of xxxii] ff. Last 6 leaves lacking and supplied in facsimile. Folio (10-1/2" x 7"). Recent (20th-century?) marbled boards with contrasting paper spine, calf lettering piece to spine, endleaves renewed. Light rubbing to extremities, boards very slightly bowed. Light toning to interior, light soiling to first page, small faint dampstain to gutter of first two leaves. $2,500. * It is difficult to overestimate the importance of the Year Books, the primary body of early English court reports. A cornerstone of the common law, they are also a primary source for our knowledge of law in medieval England and useful documents of contemporary English life, customs and manners. Though it is not known when the first manuscript volumes were compiled, the cases in all known examples are from the 1270s to 1535. Printed editions of the Year Books were first issued by William de Machlinia between 1481 and 1482. The present volume is from the so-called "quarto edition," a series of volumes issued by various printers from 1522 to 1619. Pollard and Redgrave's Short-Title Catalogue and the English Short-Title Catalogue propose a date of 1526 for this volume, putting it among the earliest quarto-edition Year Books. A note on the front free endpaper says our copy belonged to John R. Hetherington [1899-1984], an important British collector, scholar and bibliographer of early printed material. Heatherington's is the only copy listed in Pollard and Redgrave. The English Short-Title Catalogue locates 1 copy, at the British Library. No additional copies listed on OCLC or Library Hub.
