Dadhi/Attack game. 6. Kailasam/Snake and ladders. 7. Ashta Chamma. 8. Wana Guntalu/Rain pits. 9. Ancient board games which were forgotten. Games are the activities which have been played from ancient times for pastime and amusement. These are usually contests based on rules and decided by the skill, judgment or some times on luck alone. There were very many board games which were played in ancient India such as chess and pachisi. Chess originated in North western parts of India during Gupta period and then spread to Persia. This game reached Europe by about 10th century AD and by 15th century came to be known as royal game because of its popularity among the nobility. Many of the games were modified in new countries and these are known by different names in different countries thought the basic principles of the game are similar. For instance Pachisi is known as Ludo in England and Parcheesi in U.S.A. A survey of our ancient temples and forts reveal the presence of such games which remained because they were marked on the stones. A study of them and the evolution of those games makes an interesting reading. There were very many games which were played in ancient India which were lost and this fact is evident from the drawings on ancient forts and temples which we cannot identify at the present time. This book lists some of the ancient Indian board games. (jacket).

Hardcover. Zustand: As New. Contents: 1. Introduction. 2. Bahmani coins. 3. Barid Shahis of Bider coins. 4. Nizam Shahi Dynasty of Ahmadnagar coins. 5. Adil Shahis of Bijapur coins. 6. Qutb Shahi-Golkonda Sultanate coins. 7. Imad Shahis of Berar coins. Epilogue. Islamic coins were first issued in India by the Amirs of Sind in the eight century AD and their regular coinage commenced in the eleventh and twelfth century AD by the Sultans of Delhi. Bahmani was the first major Muslim dynasty (748-942AH/ 1347-1538AD) to rule in the Deccan after their revolt against the Tughlaq rule from the Delhi. After the disintegration of Bahmani rule five succession states emerged in the Deccan and they are Barid Shahi (895-1028AH/ 1489-1619AD), Nizam Shahi (902-1046AH/ 1496-1636AD), Adil Shahi (895-1097AH/ 1490-1686AD), Qutb Shahi (895-1098AH/ 1489-1687AD) and Imad Shahi (895-980AH/ 1484-1572AD) respectively. Islamic coins are unique not only for their calligraphy but also for the wealth of information that they provide and Bahmani and the five succession dynasties coins are no exception. Islamic coins usually have mints name, year of issue in Hijri era, regnal year and a legend which could be very elaborate and truly reveal the character of the issuer. Another characteristic of Islamic coins is the mention of the name of the father of the issuer which makes it easy to identify the king especially when his name is common like Ahmad and Muhammad. For example there wear four Ahmads and three Muhammad's out of eighteen Bahmani rulers and each king can be identified because they mention the name of their father and sometime even their grandfather. Deccan Sultanate coins are available in plenty in the market and this book is a guide for those non-Urdu knowledgeable coin enthusiasts to identify them and find new coins.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. 1. Introduction. 2. The list of Satavahana Kings and their years of rules. 3. Identification of Satavahana coins. 4. The identification of the coins of individual rulers of the Satavahana dynasty. 5. Satavahana silver portrait coins. 6. Symbols on Satavahana coins and their significance. 7. Flow chart for study of Satavahana coins. 8. Epilogue. Select bibliography. Satavahana was one of the most illustrious dynasties of ancient India who according to 'puranas' ruled over the Deccan and central India after the Mauryas, Sungas and Kanvas. It was indeed an indigenous dynasty that started from the Kotalingala on the banks of River Godavari in Telangana and revived the Vedic Indian culture. Satavahanas left behind great works of art such as those at famous Sanchi and Amaravati 'stupas' and rock cut temples in western India. During their long rule Satavahana dynasty provided peace, prosperity through foreign trade and they patronized a kind of art which flourished for many centuries that spread to other countries such as Sri Lanka and south-east Asia. Hence it was no surprise that Satavahana period is listed as one of the two periods of peace and prosperity in 5000-year history of India. Satavahanas issued coins made of copper, lead, point and silver. The language of Satavahana coins was Prakrit except for the reverse side of the rare silver coins was ancient Telugu. The script of the coins was Brahmi of the period. This book is a guide which helps in deciphering the legends on Satavahana coins and helps in identification of the coins of the individual Satavahana rulers.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Contents: Preface. Introduction. 1. The Asaf Jahi Dynasty. 2. The sources of Nizam's wealth. 3. Distribution and transfer of wealth. 4. How the wealth was taken out of the country. 5. The follies of Mir Barkat Ali Khan. 6. Mistakes of the Central and State Governments of India. Epilogue. Reference. Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII (1886-1967 AD) ruled the erstwhile princely state of Hyderabad during the years 1911-1948 AD and was considered to be the richest person in the world. He was also estimated to be the sixth all time wealthiest man who ever lived on this planet. He was ruling over a state spread over 82698 square miles with a population of about 9.8 million on 1881 which increased to 18.6 million in 1951. Hyderabad state was mainly an agricultural state that could hardly feed itself barely avoiding famines most of the time. The mineral wealth was not great and the total value of minerals produced in 1952 was a mere 38.7 million rupees. In ancient times Deccan was known for diamonds especially in Kollur region which almost dried up by the time of rule of later Asaf Jahi kings. Animal wealth of the state was considerable but majority was of poor breed. Industrial output was minimal and it only would satisfy local demand. Hence it would be very revealing to know the sources of enormous wealth of the last Asaf Jahi ruler. It is also astonishing to know that the recipient of this wealth Mukarram Jah now lives in a two-bedroom apartment on sixth floor in an unknown location in Turkey. The disappearance of this fabulous wealth over a period of one generation must be of the biggest mystery of the twentieth century. This book is an effort to understand the sources of Mir Osman Ali Khan's enormous wealth and the ways it must have vanished. The family of the authors is the residents of a village in the princely state for centuries and they understand the history of the Hyderabad state better. The story of Mir Osman Ali Khan and his wealth must be recorded for posterity.

The coins issued by Indo-Greek rulers have proved to an invaluable source for the reconstruction of the political history of the North-West India of ancient times. The other source materials of the period such as literary works and inscriptions are very meager and whatever is known about those kings is mostly derived from their unique coins. The Indo-Greek rulers were very innovative and issued bilingual coins which have a special niche in Indian coins since they helped in the decipherment of ancient Indian scripts namely Kharoshthi and Brahmi. This led to the study of Indian epigraphy and it has been authoritatively estimated that 80% of our knowledge of the history of India before 1000 AD is derived from, inscriptional sources. There were also other important aspects of Indo-Greek coins. The Indo-Greek coins presented the portraits of the rulers on the obverse side with a Greek legend around it. The reverse depicted a deity and monograms. The chronology of Indo-Greek rulers is mainly based on the numismatic evidence on the coins. The sources of Indo-Greek coins have been the hoards numbering around 34 and this book describes a new and large hoard of Indo-Greek silver coins numbering about 689. There were coins of three Indo-Greek kings namely Apollodotus II, Archebios, Dionysios and a Western Kshtrap ruler Nahapana. The book presents the details of these coins and also describes the design of these coins and ways to study them. (jacket).
