Hardcover. Zustand: New. This book makes a comprehensive study of development in North East India focusing on the Autonomous District Council (ADC) areas of Meghalaya under the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India. Spread over five chapters, this book begins with a larger perspective of colonial anthropology that justified the rule of difference in North East India and related the rule of difference with the colonial modality of development which drained out the incredible resources from this region. After transfer of power, territorial autonomy for the tribes of Assam, not their development, engaged the state builders and the regional leaders. In this light, this book tracks the roadmap of the Autonomous District Council under the Sixth Schedule in Meghalaya and makes critical reflections upon the developmental functions of the institution. This book then re-examines the developmental role of ADC under market economy which found a new geography of opportunity in the ADC areas of Meghalaya and unveils the emerging challenges of development and social opportunity of the people living in the ADC areas of Meghalaya.

The versions and standpoints on violation of human rights are highly polarized. The two parties (the terrorists and the state) blame each other for such violation. The overall terrorist scenario let loose both by the militants and by the army has stalled the civic life of millions of people in this region. The casualties happen with the civilians militants as well as with the army personnel. Terrorism let loose by the terrorists and the arm forces has also exposed serious democratic deficit leading to denial of human rights in this region. The role of the civic initiatives and activists for restoration of human rights in this region is of special significance. The selected articles presented in a national seminar on the above theme organized by North East India Council for Social Science Research Shillong are being published in this book. The contributors dealt with conceptual issues and presented narratives of human rights violation caused both by the state and by the arm forces. This book also provides useful insights to the problem and is extremely useful to the enforcement agencies diplomats activists and human rights practitioners. 268 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The book begins with a critique of the inter-relationship between community, state and market and then looks into the cross-border transactions in North-East India with special focus on the Tripura-Bangladesh border. It problematises the spatial identity of Tripura in pre and post-partition era and the implications of partition and border-making to the cross-border communities of Tripura and Bangladesh. It reflects on trade transactions between India and Bangladesh and more significantly, on informal cross-border trade, social transactions and people-to-people contact across the border. This book also captures the community anxieties emerging from land boundary institutions and the issues of conflict and development in the cross-border space of Tripura-Bangladesh. In conclusion the book captures the dynamics of community inter-dependence and opposition in the post-partition condition in the Tripura and Bangladesh.

Regional Cooperation. 4. Governance and Security. 5. Contemporary Macro-Economic Trends. 6. The Trade Scenario. 7. A Critique of the Look East Policy. Index. Re-scaling of space has been an inseparable part of the capitalist development process. While the search for newer markets necessitates capitalism to transcend space, it simultaneously also requires spatial fixes for each regime of accumulation. It is a multi-scalar dialectical process which scholars have ascribed as annihilation of space by time and space-time compression. Among other factors, the interplay of both these processes related to time and space results in conditions for construction and re-construction of space in the form of territories. The contemporary phase of globalization is also a part of this longue duree. Re-scaling of space in the form of territories has also been an inherent part of Northeast India. From the perspective of the state there has been varying justifications e.g. whereas revenue generation along with trade has been the sole criterion for the colonial state, it has been politico-administrative for the post-colonial Indian state. Till the 1950's, the region was viewed within the anthropological paradigm. In the 1960's, the Indo-Chinese War (1962) marked a shift of the region towards security paradigm. The 1970's marked another shift towards political paradigm. This continued till the 1980's. From the late 1980's onward NER entered into a development paradigm under neo-liberal globalization. Now, the question of trade which was hitherto stymied and ignored during the post-colonial period, gained momentum with the launch of Look East Policy and eventual North Eastern Region Vision 2020. Northeast India under these two policies was officially made a major player in trade and commerce across the frontier and even beyond to South and Southeast Asia. This offered an 'arrowhead' role to NER in the matter of regional and cross-regional trade.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. This book is a road map of Northeast India from colonial race theory to the economic liberalization regime, both of which demeaned the people of the region and appropriated its natural resources. The legacy of race theory survived in the post-colonial regime until the economic liberalization opened up the fused society of Northeast to a refracted society through the mechanism of market economy. This book makes an overall critique of both colonial anthropology and market economy in Northeast India. The subject being very vast, scope of this study is restricted to five chapters. The first two chapters deal with 'colonial race theory and its application Northeast India; the third and fourth chapters deal with ' the basic contours of Liberalization' and 'Liberalization-led Market Economy in Northeast India' and the fifth chapter makes a challenge to social policy in the Northeast India under market Economy'.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Early State Formations in Northeast India CONTENTS Foreward vii Preface ix 1. Theories of Early State Formations 1 2. Assam 26 3. Manipur 50 4. Tripura 73 The narrative of early state formations is a globally emerging multidimentional research field that delves into the critical cotours of social formations by knitting together the myriad of micro issues resulting from the case studies for collective theorical understaning. Friedrick Engels The Origin of the Family, Private Property and State, (1872) and Lewis Henry Morgan s Ancient Society (1907) are among the early theorizations on the origin of state, while The Early State (1978) edited by Henri J.M. Claessen and Peter Skalnik propelled the state formation studies on a global scale. Engels underlined the rise of private property as the defining point of the beginning of state formation and Morgan noted that the ancient social organizations were mostly founded on the Gentes, Phratries and Tribes and that the gentile organization, as distinct from the political society, was the oldest and the most widely prevalent institution of humankind. Claessen and Skalnik enumerated the minimum requirements like territory, size of population, social stratification, citizenship, centralization, autonomy, productivity and ideology to become a state. The global experience of the selective case studies made by Claessen and Skalnik revealed that the legitimization of authority was basically linked to ideology of the state.

This book gives detailed information about the current trends and major issues of women emancipation and empowerment in the Northeastern region of India. The approach of the book is empirical with current database. The articles in this book reflect the views of the scholars of the region. There is epistemic difference between the two concepts and therefore a distinction is made between the two. Empowerment in this book is however seen mainly as a trajectory for women's emancipation. The approach of the book is empirical with a realistic conceptual base. This book highlights the roles of the state civil society community based organizations and the women agencies towards the wider cause of emancipation of women in the northeastern region and reflects upon the different initiatives towards the goal of emancipation of the women of the northeast. Some of the articles in this book give useful recommendations that might be of strategic significance for the emancipation of the poor and the disadvantaged women in Northeast India. This book is an important addition to the literature on women studies in this region and has great use value to the academic community social activists women agencies policy makers and to development administrators. 344 pp.

How inclusive is rural development? 4. Intellectual property: whose property? 5. The political economy of inclusive growth. Index. Inclusive development appeared as a metropolitan discourse particularly in the recent past. The discourse on the subject in India however started even later. Unlike the West no serious academic discourse on the subject took place in India before it came as a new development policy and a paradigm. This concept first caught the attention of the policymakers and then of the academic community. A major landmark of inclusive development in India was the Eleventh Five Year Plan. Since then the concept became one of the major concerns of not only the policymakers but also of the academic community. This book is an addition to the inclusive development discourse in India. It presents a critique of the political economy of inclusive development and views public policies and the Indian social scene, rural development, intellectual property rights from the larger perspective of concept and theories of inclusion and exclusion. This book ends with an overall critique of inclusive development. It unpacks the political economy implications of inclusion and exclusion both as a normative theory and as a political economy. The central purpose of this book is to demystify the concept in the Indian socio-economic context and to sensitise the academic community and policy makers about the criticalities of the inclusive paradigm of development. This happened mainly because of the externally induced demographic growth in this region. Many movements took place in the mean time in the region to address the issue. Yet over the last four decades this question remained unresolved. From social policy angle the states of this region exhibited failed state syndrome. This led to both quantitative and qualitative crises of growing population in the region. In this backdrop this book gives very useful insight to the population dynamics in the region from interdisciplinary angles. The articles published in this book are well researched and touch upon the historical aspects larger issues of population growth in the region state level and micro level case studies and upon the larger policy issues pertaining to population growth and human development in this region. This book immensely contributes to the existing literature on the subject and contains strong academic value. This book is also useful for the policy makers and policy researchers in and on this region. 360 pp.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -Surface chemistry and physics are active fields of research because of the obvious scientific and technological implications. One of the many motivations for this burgeoning effort has been the desire to understand surface corrosion, metallurgy and catalytic activity in order to address environmental concerns. In particular, such efforts are important for strongly correlated and heavy fermion systems like the actinides. These metals are among the most complex of the long-lived elements, and in the solid state, display some of the most unusual behaviors of any series in the periodic table. The actinides are characterized by the gradual filling of the 5f electron shell with the degree of localization increasing with the atomic number Z along the last series of the eriodic table. It is widely believed that the properties and the behavior of the 5f electrons change dramatically starting from somewhere between Pu and Am. In this work, atomic and molecular hydrogen and oxygen and water adsorptions on the (0001) surface of dhcp americium have been studied at both non-spin-orbit coupling (NSO) and spin-orbit coupling (SO) levels using GGA-DFT.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 216 pp. Englisch.
