Ravilious (1903-1942) died while on active service in Iceland. He was appointed to the Admiralty as an Official War Artist in December 1939 with the honorary rank of Captain in the Royal Marines. He visited ports, naval bases and airfields around Britain, witnessed the allied invasion of and retreat from Norway and produced watercolours of subjects ranging from the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal in action to the interior of a mobile pigeon loft.

The character of Perdita, a female figure woven into the text, accompanies Pope-Hennessy through the streets of the capital. Perdita was 'loosely' based on his friend Clarissa Churchill (later Clarissa Eden, Countess of Avon) to whom the book is dedicated and with whom he spent many hours exploring London's churches, etc. London Fabric won the Hawthornden Prize.
