Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Alex Gotfryd (illustrator). First Edition. [good solid book with minor shelfwear; jacket is lightly soiled and a bit age-toned, and has been nibbled just a bit along the bottom edge by some insect]. The author's first novel, written when he was 19, which "describes the quest of an existential Candide, searching vainly for a search worth searching for, trapped by the paradox that destroys the distinction between freedom and restriction, acceptance and rejection, affirmation and despair." (You know -- the Sixties.) Given its current scarcity in the marketplace, I suspect this book -- described by one online critic/appreciator as "an erudite, strange, entertaining and love-filled novel from an extremely intelligent [then-] young man who has since felt no need to return to this sort of thing" -- enjoys a bit of a cult following, probably not unrelated to the author's known affinity for the work of Thomas Pynchon. Rauch, under his full name of Earl Mac Rauch, went on to write a handful of notable movies, including Martin Scorsese's NEW YORK, NEW YORK and the 1984 sci-fi oddity THE ADVENTURES OF BUCKAROO BANZAI (which has a very definite cult following, and in fact traces its origins to the friendship between Rauch and the film's director-producer W.D. Richter, which began with the latter's discovery of this very novel) . NOTE that several passages and pages throughout the book are X-ed out -- but this is the way the book was printed.

Vintage, borderless, double weight photograph of director Martin Scorsese and actor Robert De Niro listening to an audio cassette on the set of the 1977 film. With the stamp of photographer Alan Pappe, and a date stamp of May 6, 1977, on the verso. From his archive. Pappe worked as a film still and press photographer for 30 years, photographing a who's who of film and music stars, including iconic images of Sharon Tate, Jimi Hendrix, and Liza Minnelli, as well as album cover for the "Grease" soundtrack album, and the interior images of Jefferson Airplane's "After Bathing at Baxter's." His 1972 "Time" magazine cover photograph of Minnelli in "Cabaret" is part of the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. Scorsese's paean to the classic Hollywood musical, about two musicians who form a tumultuous partnership on and off stage. Best known for the title song, indelibly associated with Frank Sinatra. Shot on location in New York. 9.75 x 6.75 inches. Minor touch up with black marker to the lower left edge, else Near Fine.
