Uma condição que precede o aparecimento de doenças cardiovasculares e diabetes mellitus tipo II é a síndrome metabólica, que inclui: HDL colesterol reduzido, triglicérides, glicemia, pressão arterial e circunferência da cintura elevados. A presença de três destes fatores caracteriza a síndrome metabólica. Surpreendentemente, esta síndrome afeta entre 5 e 10% dos adolescentes, chegando a 1/3 entre os obesos. A dificuldade é que sua identificação envolve procedimentos laboratoriais que não são rotineiros entre adolescentes. Portanto, a utilização de testes simplificados, que possam ser aplicados em larga escala, como dentro da escola, ajudaria numa triagem inicial. Para esta finalidade, testes de aptidão cardiorrespiratória e indicadores antropométricos de sobrepeso/obesidade, podem ser aplicados e os resultados confrontados com pontos de corte específicos, propostos para identificar adolescentes em maior risco de saúde metabólica. Este livro aborda conceitos teóricos em torno desta temática e como, na prática, profissionais podem aplicar testes físicos direcionados para esta finalidade.
