The upper board with a large painted and incised panel after one of Freida's plates, the lower board with a smaller panel after a tailpiece, and the central spine compartment with an additional design by the binder. First published in 1890, after serialisation in the Revue des Deux Mondes (1889), Thais is among France's best-known contes philosophiques: the story of the Alexandrian courtesan Thais and her conversion by the ascetic monk Paphnuce, whose own spiritual certainty disintegrates in the process. Issued in the year of Franceâs death, this finely illustrated edition is the most desirable of the few books illustrated by Raphael Freida (1877-1942), a pupil of Jean-Paul Laurens. His illustrations emphasise the workâs underlying eroticism, sharpening the tension between ascetic renunciation and sensual desire that defines the narrative. Text is in French. Housed in a custom decorative lustrous multicolored paper-covered slipcase, with a protective insert for the spines, lettered and embossed in red. Edition limited 301 copies, this being a special unnumbered deluxe copy on japan paper (of which 100 numbered copies are noted at the limitation page); unlike the ordinary numbered copies, the limitation page here notes: "Exemplaire imprimé pour M. Georges Calmann-Levy." A notable limited illustrated edition of Sophocles' classic Greek tragedy, issued with an additional full suite of plates. Vol.1 contains the text of Oedipus Rex ("Oedipe Roi" in French) and a significant portion of Raphaël Freida's original engravings and drawings, integrated directly with the text. This integration is vital, as Freida's artwork is not merely decorative; it serves to amplify the emotional intensity and psychological depth of the tragedy. The quality of the printing and the paper in this volume are of high importance. Volume 2 "États des Planches" (States of the Plates) is dedicated to showcasing the "states of the plates", providing a detailed look at the various stages of the engraving process, allowing the viewer to observe the evolution of Freida's artwork, from initial sketches to finished gorgeous engravings. This volume is of particular interest to those interested in the technical aspects of printmaking. It should be noted that surprisingly Freida's powerful illustrated edition has never been subsequently reissued. Volume one has some closed tearing on the original glassine and wrappers at the head and tail of the spine. A closed tear to the head of the spine itself. Volume with only a few minor instances of tearing to the glassine. Interiors with all images pristine and vibrant. Wrappers and glassines in very good- to very good+, interiors in near fine condition overall. Georges Calmann-Levy was at one time the head of the Calmann-Lévy publishing house in France, the son of it's founder Kalmus "Calmann" Lévy (18191891).

Tirée à 301 exemplaires, celui-ci un des 78 sur japon ou vélin Van Gelder contenant normalement 3 états des gravures, second papier avec 12 exemplaires réimposé…s in-4. Le nôtre, n°52, sur japon. Freida n'illustra que cinq ouvrages. Le prospectus est illustré de 100 compositions de Freida, 19 hors-texte (dont le frontispice) et 81 en-tête de sonnets. Exemplaire enrichi de deux prospectus sur papier japon reliés en fin d'ouvrage, papiers légèrement différents. Notre exemplaire ne contient qu'une seule suite, l'eau-forte pure, en feuilles. Curieusement, il semble que de la quasi-totalité des exemplaires parmi ces 78 devant contenir trois suites n'en ont qu'une ou deux. De fait, de ce tirage, mis à part un exemplaire qui était enrichi de nombreuses suites (dont une sur parchemin), les cinq autres que nous avons identifiés, en plus du nôtre, n'ont qu'une ou deux suites sur les trois. Talvart & Place (XII, 81) indique la mise en vente eut lieu en décembre 1918. La guerre a donc aussi eu des effets sur l'édition en elle-même. Reliure signée Bernasconi, plein maroquin janséniste noir doublé de maroquin rouge, tranches dorées sur témoin, couvertures et dos conservés, étui bordé. Légers défauts. La suite est présentée dans une épaisse chemise cartonnée qui devait contenir à l'origine le texte. Cette chemise est donc trop épaisse pour la suite. Superbe ouvrage, superbe exemplaire, le chef-d'œuvre de Freida. Raphaël Freida (illustrator).

Ce roman fut publié dans la Revue des Deux Mondes en 1899, puis édité chez Calmann-Lévy en 1890. Il conte la vie de Thaïs, une belle courtisane du IVème siècle officiant à Alexandrie et dont la renommée…était importante. Le moine Paphnuce parvint à la convertir au Christianisme, mais la beauté de la pécheresse hanta son coeur. Le réalisme, souvent cruel, du trait de Raphaël FREIDA, est ici magnifié. Ce roman inspira Jules Massenet dont il tira son célèbre opéra "La Méditation de Thaïs". Les gravures ont été tirées à la presse à bras par Leblanc et Trautman. Tirage limité à 781 exemplaires.
