Against his will, she married John Fremont, an impecunious military man. Fremont ended up with astonishing career, becoming ( among many things) "The Pathfinder", and the first candidate of the new Republican Party for President of the United States in 1856 - and Jessie was the woman behind the man, and here is her story. Ruth was a biographer of women who was married to Prof. Randall, the first scholarly biographer of Lincoln. Here she was inspired by using over 300 unpublished letters between the Fremonts.

Eddie is necessarily glimpsed only briefly, he died in Springfield at the age of four. Willie died while Lincoln was President, and his death during the darkest days of the Civil War was a tragic blow to the family. Tad was a famous prankster in the White House. He survived his father, but not for long. Robert Todd Lincoln survived into adulthood, dealt with his mother's finances and mental illness, and was a statesman (Secretary of War) and an industrialist (President of the Pullman Company), yet carried the burden of his martyred father with him throughout his life. Good in very good dust jacket. DJ has some wear and soiling, edge tears and some rubbing and chips.
