Though mixed farming has been a common practice in India since immemorial due to existence of complementary and supplementary relationship between crop production and animal production systems dairy has gained a momentum due to commercialization and it is a rural income generating activity in India. Agriculture enterprise has not provided constant employment to rural people but dairy has not only provided gainful employment but also provided assured and regular income. The national income from animal husbandry has increased from 3 per cent in 1950 to 25 per cent at present in GDP / GDPR of agriculture. Hence an attempt has been made in this book to know the position of dairy animals in semi arid regions affected due to drought during 5 past years. A cluster of villages were selected in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh Kolar district of Karnataka and Erode District of Tamil Nadu. At each location it covers 75 farmers i.e. 15 households each in landless marginal (1 ha) small (1 2 ha) medium (2 4 ha) and large farmer families. The cost and returns for Holstein Friesian Jersey and mixed crossbreds vis a vis local cows and local buffaloes were studied and optimum feeding schedules (dry fodder equivalents and concentrate feed) at different milk production levels were also worked out based on the prevailing practices. Even after more than fifty years of development planning Indian economy continues to be agriculture based. The dependence of people on agriculture did not decline in a scale comparable to the reduction in the contribution of agriculture to the National Gross Domestic Product. Despite the significant progress in the overall development of the economy the rural urban disparities continue to be glaring. Still A very large majority of rural population dependent on agriculture and agricultural development is synonymous to rural development. Establishing Krishi Vigyana Kendras (KVK) (Farm Science Centres) is one of the key institutional innovations that sought to facilitate agricultural and rural development. Making the knowledge and other enabling resources in a relevant and readily usable form available to the rural population is the key mandate of KVK. Since the operational domain of KVK is the district where it is located it is in a better position to appreciate the local conditions. There are 580 KVKs in India to look after the rural development in their respective jurisdiction of the districts of each KVK. The KVK at CRIDA has the responsibility of contributing to the agricultural and rural development in Rangareddy District of Andhra Pradesh and is carrying out the works in collaboration with other research organizations in Hyderabad and all line Departments of State Government. This publication is an endeavour to put together information on the relevant technologies that are helpful to farm and household development. 168 pp.
