Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. First English translation of this novel published in the Irish language in 1941. Brian O'Nolan (I1911 1966), his pen names being Flann O'Brien and Myles na Gopaleen, was an Irish civil service official, novelist, playwright and satirist, who is now considered a major figure in twentieth-century Irish literature. He is regarded as a key figure in modernist and postmodern literature. His English language novels, such as At Swim-Two-Birds and The Third Policeman, were written under the O'Brien pen name. His many satirical columns in The Irish Times and an Irish-language novel, An Béal Bocht, were written under the name Myles na Gopaleen. An Béal Bocht (The Poor Mouth) is a 1941 novel in Irish by Flann O'Brien, published under the pseudonym "Myles na Gopaleen". It is regarded as one of the most important Irish-language novels of the twentieth century. This English translation by Patrick C. Power appeared in 1973. [Wikipedia] With 12 dark and funny text illustrations and cover illustration by Ralph Steadman. The eighty-eight year old Steadman is a well known British illustrator probably best known for his collaboration with the American writer Hunter S. Thompson. Steadman is renowned for his political and social caricatures, cartoons and picture books [Wikipedia]. It appears that Steadman autographed the title page of the book, writing his name Bound in brown paper covers with a yellow and gilt title label to spine. With a gold pictorial dust jacket that has been price clipped. Both the binding and the dust jacket show minor signs of wear but are otherwise in very good condition. With map designs on front and rear endpapers. Text pages are in lean and bright and also in very good condition. Measures 6.25 x 9.5 inches. 128 pages. LIT/072524.

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, signed by the illustrator in pen to title page; containing around 100 in-text and full page illustrations and small flourishes by Ralph Steadman; publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in silver, a very good copy with original typographic dust-jacket in very good condition with price scribbled out in pen; 263pp. If the scrawled title on the dust jacket doesn't give it away, this edition throwing together Adrian Mitchell's poetry and Ralph Steadman's imagery is arresting, fast, irreverent, and, at times, messy. It comes at you from every angle. Available in first edition in very good condition with the illustrator's signature. Adrian Mitchell was well known for his anti-establishment poetry and as a noted figure in the British left. Ralph Steadman's images and scribbles are equally satirical, incorporating Christian, capitalist, and nationalist imagery in ways equally humorous as harrowing. The eponymous Beauty Douglas is the name of a Black South African girl who died before she turned one month old, buried in the children's graveyard in Dimbaza, South Africa, 'where women & children who are not needed by the white economy are sent'. The foreword describes her grave, littered with rubbish among hundreds of other young children's graves, featured in the film Last Grave at Dimbaza (1974).

Paperback. First Edition. Complete run of seven issues plus the final, rare "Suppressed Issue" produced in Canada. Landmark article "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" in issue #4 signed by Ralph Steadman in red ink. A very Near Fine set, bright and clean set; truly excellent shape. No subscriber labels. Some wraps and contents age-toned, staples occasionally rusted. Scanlan's was a counterculture magazine that broke down nearly as many boundaries as its predecessor, Ramparts, during its short existence. It launched "gonzo journalism" with the article "The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved" by Hunter S. Thompson, illustrated by Ralph Steadman, in its June 1970 issue-- that's the one with Nixon's face being punched into oblivion. Steadman's splattery signature graces the negative space around the derby-goer's head on the article's title page. He and Thompson would go on to collaborate on the book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which brought gonzo journalism widespread popularity. The set also features work by R. Crumb, Alfred McCoy (author of The Politics of Heroin), JFK investigator Jim Garrison's cohort William Turner, and Robert Altman well as other Thompson (AKA Raoul Duke) and Steadman work.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Vintage screening invitation for the 1980 film, illustrated by Ralph Steadman on the recto, with film credits on the verso. More than a little loosely based on Hunter S. Thompson's obituary for his closest associate, Oscar Zeta Acosta, a.k.a. Dr. Gonzo, "The Banshee Screams for Buffalo Meat," which appeared in October 1977 issue of "Rolling Stone." A film that, despite being an unholy mess, represents in retrospect an intersection of ideas and talent, as well as the first of many messy attempts to commit to celluloid the basically un-filmable life and work of Hunter S. Thompson. Bill Murray, at this time little more than a droll comedic sensation, arguably made the first step toward becoming the four-dimensional icon he is today, though not necessarily by intention. Both Murray and Thompson had serious concerns about the quality of Kaye's script, and at the beginning of filming both Thompson and Ralph Steadman came onto the set as "executive consultants." Though the author says he did little other than "wander around and fire machine guns," his influence on Murray was profound. The actor became obsessed with his idol, and by all accounts became one with him. During production, Murray and Thompson engaged in a series of dangerous one-upmanship contests, including a Houdini-inspired stunt where Thompson tied Murray to a chair and threw him into a swimming pool. Murray nearly drowned before Thompson pulled him out. The pair's obsession with the film's poor script and continuity led to a hasty final addition of a voice-over narration and two explanatory scenes at the film's end. Three days prior to release, a press screening was canceled because the film was still being edited. When Murray returned to the Saturday Night Live set in the fall of 1980, he was still immersed in character, complete with long black cigarette holder, dark glasses, and nasty habits. One of the show's writers said that Murray .".was not Bill Murray, he was Hunter Thompson. You couldn't talk to him without talking to Hunter Thompson." (Doug Hill and Jeff Weingrad, "Saturday Night Live: A Backstage History," William Morrow, 1989) 3.75 x 9 inches, with a satin finish recto and matte verso. Fine.
