I guess that the fact that the author, Olive Schreiner, published the book with a male nom de plume is testimony itself to the time (late 1800 s) and the place (Cape Province, South Africa) it was pu…blished. Research suggests that women s role in society and a range of other social issues were central themes for this book and led to it being highly acclaimed. Please find then: The Story of an African Farm- A Novel by Ralph Iron (Olive Schreiner). This small hard cover book (5 ¼ x 7 ½ inches, 258 pages plus 3 pages of publisher s adverts) was published by Rand, McNally & Company of Chicago and New York, undated but the Preface is dated 1883. The book is bound in warm Kelly green boards with blind-stamped framing and other decorations and gilt titles on cover and spine. The top edge is gilt and there is a bound-in green satin page-marker. Alas, the book is not illustrated. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The boards are a bit rubbed along the high points and lightly bumped at the corners and spine tips. Inside, there is an inked gift inscription of the front endpaper but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. The front hinge is intact; the rear cracked but the binding still seems tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Language: ENG.

Olive Schreiner (1855-1920) is known today as the first major South African novelist, one of the great precursors of modern feminism, and as a champion of socialism and pacifism. She was born in South Africa of missionary parents and as a twenty-one-year-old governess in 1886 wrote The Story of An African Farm, a novel that brought her immediate and enduring world fame and that has spoken to successive generations of women. With the publication of woman and labor in 1911, Schreiner returned to the themes of her fiction in a studious but polemical essay which became a central text of the women's movement during the first decades of the century. Though the work made its appearance during the campaign for female suffrage, it was not preoccupied with that issue alone, but with women's alienation from labor and their consequently unequal relationship with men in work and society at large. Olive Schreiner's life has long been controversial and has always been considered significant because many of the issues that confront our own period--how to connect not only social radicalism and feminism but also personal liberation--are refracted through her consciousness and writing. She is best remembered today for her novel The Story of an African Farm which has been highly acclaimed since its first publication in 1883 for the bold manner in which it deals with some of the burning issues of the day, including agnosticism, existential independence, individualism, the professional aspirations of women, and the elemental nature of life on the colonial frontier. In more recent studies she has also been identified as an advocate for those sidelined by the forces of British Imperialism, such as the Afrikaners, and later other South African groups like Blacks, Jews and Indians to name but a few. Although she showed interest in socialism, pacifism, vegetarianism and feminism amongst other things, her true views escape restrictive categorisations. Her published works and other surviving writings promote implicit values like moderation, friendship and understanding amongst all peoples and avoid the pitfalls of political radicalism which she consciously eschewed.
