South Asia is one of the very few regions in the world with geographical contiguity as well as linguistic and cultural homogeneity. The region inhabited by more than one fifth of global population is afflicted by a number of social political and economic problems compounded by political mistrust and suspicion. The South Asian states are plagued by inter state conflicts over boundaries. In addition there is a sharp increase in unemployment poverty epidemics drug trafficking and environmental degradation etc. in the region which have internal and external dimensions. All these issues pose a far more serious and immediate challenge to the region. The South Asian region has potential to acquire a momentum of its own leading to the total transformation of the region in the near future. The member states have to set aside their disputes in order to improve their economic and trade relations. They have to realize that it is high time to shift their focus from the security of the borders to regional cooperation. The contributors in the volume diplomats academia and media not only focused on the problems being faced by the South Asian countries but also suggested the amicable solutions to overcome these problems and the possible ways to reconstruct a new South Asia. Thus the main focus is to probe into various mechanisms to be adopted to make the South Asian region free from conflicts and enhance economic cooperation amongst the states thereby improving the welfare of the people. While analyzing the conflicts and misunderstandings between/among the countries in the region the volume tries to underline the issues related to human development traditional and non traditional security and the role of external powers in the peace process of South Asia. 252 pp.

The volume argues that India must take the lead role in establishing ocean management for littoral countries to maintain maritime stability and good order in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The volume discusses how maritime sphere of influence has become a dominant factor in global affairs. Ninety per cent of the world's trade travels by sea, major international trade centres and economic powers are located on the coast and thirty six per cent of the world's oceans are encompassed within the exclusive economic zone. There is a strong link between economy and the world's oceans, and hence good order at sea is essential. After end of the Cold War when the liberalization process commenced, India realized the importance of its role in maintaining peace, security and stability in the IOR as a responsible maritime state. Fourteen papers in this volume examine the current and future prospects of maritime stability and good order in the IOR and approach India should adopt.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Indo-Pacific, as a single maritime entity, represents more than one-third of world population and four largest economies: US, China, Japan and India. Besides, ten countries of ASEAN are seen as the fastest growing economies in Asia/world and the region is considered to be centre of the Indo-Pacific. Indo-Pacific consists of 38 countries, shares 44 per cent of world surface, hosts 65 per cent of world population, and contributes 62 per cent of world GDP and 46 per cent of world merchandise trade. Convergence/confluence of Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean is called as Indo-Pacific as a single maritime entity. Major Powers and their allies are trying to synergise these two oceans into a single geo-political construct. Indo-Pacific is the chosen acronym being popularised by US, India and their other maritime partners, like Australia and Japan. This new maritime conundrum of 21st century is meant to counter the growing expansion of China s power and its presence in Indian Ocean. Chinese occupation of islands belonging to other littorals in South China Sea and its open defiance of international law of the sea principles, like freedom of navigation in high seas added greater steam to the US-led campaign against China of which India, Japan, Australia and other countries are willing partners. China s ambitious Belt Road Initiative project and its oceanic component, Maritime Silk Route are raising several issues of geo-political concern to the littoral powers of the two oceans. Against the backdrop of the above bourgeoning developments embracing Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean, this volume facilitates different stakeholders including policy planners/makers, bureaucrats, naval personnel, statesmen and researchers to know about various issues related to Indo-Pacific.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. While the British decided to relinquish all their commitments in the Indian Ocean region and to withdraw all their forces from East of Suez, the French showed no such inclination, despite the freedom struggles against colonial rule in many parts of the region. France continued its historical mission and developed new ambitions and interests in the Indian Ocean region. Its presence and commitment in the Western Indian Ocean (and the South Pacific) resulted in Paris playing a significant role in global affairs. The French presence in the Indian Ocean region added 2.6 million km², constituting twenty-four percent of its EEZ, providing it to explore and exploit the resources in the oceanic waters. Though it is an extra-regional power, the island states have acknowledged France as a resident state in the region. The volume focuses on understanding how France has continued its dominance in the Indian Ocean region. It examines France's political, economic, and strategic interests and its relation with the Western Indian Ocean states - Mauritius, Madagascar, Seychelles, and Comoros. Further, the volume covers France's role in the Indian Ocean Commission, its policy towards demilitarisation of the region, and its bilateral and multilateral engagements in the region and beyond.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. India s increasing naval role in the Asia-Pacific, graduating from the ASEAN region into West Pacific, should be viewed from two broad but interrelated angles. One, the two-ocean convergent theory articulated by all major powers which sought to integrate Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean into an integral economic and strategic framework, ignoring thus their distinctiveness. Secondly, China s westward maritime (also continental) movement invited counter strategic responses by its rivals expressed through such acronyms like Mausum, confluence of oceans and Indo-Pacific. India s graduation into the West Pacific has been largely a function of America s evolving strategic doctrines which chained regions beginning with the Western Indian Ocean and its northern and eastern components, South China Sea and the West Pacific into a geo-political combine. India is seen as one of the major countries to play a significant role in maintaining peace, stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Military exercise around East Asia Sea should be seen as symbolic act. Naval power alone is not productive but alludes India s decision to join Quad as a right strategic move as it will help to counter China. China s increasing politico-military assertiveness, string of pearls strategy, the conceptual framework of Indo-Pacific as a construct, India s geographical advantages and its growing concerns in the Indian Ocean, India s role in balancing the power in Indo- Pacific and India s efforts to promote peace and prosperity of the region with other powers are some of the concerns of India. This volume certainly enhances the quality of literature on the subject and helps not only scholars but also policy planners, bureaucrats, naval personnel, statesmen to understand the nuances of various issues related to India s policy towards Indian Ocean and Indo-Pacific.

A new maritime India indeed is evident going by the constructive activities around the coasts. Development of Indian infrastructure is essential for country's economic development and growth. As India adopted growth-led economic policy, serious plans are afoot to develop a strong and long-term transport infrastructure and logistics. With advancement in exploration technology, deep-sea mining, huge potential for exploration of hydrocarbons, petroleum, natural gas, rare earth metals, the demand for ports and shipping services is one of the important maritime strategies. Important policy moves are initiated by India in recent years to integrate shipping activities with inland transport networks. Sagarmala, Golden Quadrangle, East Coast Corridor are some of the latest policy decisions to build intermodal transportation for facilitating connectivity to the ports. Policy initiatives like the major India Port decision in 2016 would augment the Indian ship construction and modernization effort. There are other major issue areas of maritime infrastructure that merit urgent policy attention in India. Thirteen papers in this volume examine how India would address the various issues of India's maritime infrastructure.
