Soft cover. Zustand: New. This is an important little book based on lectures delivered at a celebration in honour of Professor KN Panikkar's 85th birthday. Popularly known as KN, he is perhaps the most well known figure in Kerala, with a huge reputation as public intellectual throughout the country. It is fitting that the scholars invited to celebrate his life and work should themselves be significant scholars who have made communication with a wider readership and audience a part of their academic endeavour, and like KN, stand for for the causes of secularism and democracy in this country. The presentations in this slim volume include weighty, but lucidly expressed thoughts on issues of contemporary concern and their historical and social and economic background. The history of dissent in ancient Indian history and its relevance today for democratic alternatives to the current regimes, the significance of the legacies of the national movement that are abiding, the modern weight of neoliberal policies of the last few decades and the necessity for fighting them in order to make a breakthrough in the current political and social impasse, and the experience with secularism and democracy in the post independence era are brought into focus to understand the crisis of Indian democracy, the prevalence of fascistic tendencies under the Modi regime, and the directions needed for a more humane society and polity.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Compiled and edited by noted scholar Rajan Welukar, Gandhi@150 explores the relevance of Mahatma Gandhi s ideas in today s world and the impact of his philosophy across a wide spectrum of areas such as religion, economics, science, education, the arts and health and development. In this book, the contributors explain how certain Gandhian concepts can be used for our nation s advancement. For example, Gandhian Engineering can help boost India s progress with its focus on getting more from fewer resources for more people. In addition, the gram swaraj approach alone can stop the mass exodus of youth from villages to cities in search of jobs a major worry for urban planners and village economies today. These are just a few of the many applicable solutions based on Gandhi s ideas you will come across in these pages. To celebrate Gandhi s 150th birth anniversary, experts from various fields, such as Anil Kakodkar, RA Mashelkar, Douglas Roche, Ela Gandhi, Tushar Gandhi, Justice RC Chavan, Rajkumar Hirani and Daniel C Taylor among others, have contributed to this remarkable anthology. This book will help you understand why Gandhi s views are relevant now more than ever. (jacket).

Soft cover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. "While secularism has been integral to India s democracy for more than fifty years, its uses and limits are being debated anew. Signs of a crisis in the relations between state, society, and religion include the violence against Muslims in Gujarat and the precarious situation of India s minorities more generally; personal laws that vary by religious community; the affiliation of political parties with fundamentalist religious organizations; and the rallying of sections of the diasporic Hindu community behind nationalist Hinduism. A crisis of secularism undoubtedly exists, but whether the state can resolve conflicts and ease tensions or is itself part of the problem are matters of vigorous debate. In this continuingly relevant book, twenty leading Indian intellectuals assess the contradictory ideals, policies, and practices of secularism in India. Scholars of history, anthropology, religion, politics, law, philosophy, and media studies here consider the history of secularism in India; the relationship between secularism and democracy; and shortcomings in the categories majority and minority. They examine how debates about secularism play out in schools, the media, and the popular cinema. And they address two of the most politically charged sites of crisis: personal law and the right to practice and encourage religious conversion. Together the essays inject insightful analysis into the fraught controversy about the shortcomings and uncertain future of secularism in the world today.".

Index India s Aged: Needs and Vulnerabilities discusses the most vulnerable aspects of elderly life-health and well-being-under the current conditions of economic and societal change. This volume explores (a) whether the nature of living arrangements has a bearing on the health outcomes of the elderly; (b) whether the real or perceived economic dependence and financial vulnerability of the elderly is conditioned by translation of capabilities into functioning; and (c) the implied healthcare costs, which are defined as based on both actual needs and the elderly people s own perception of their needs. Living arrangements have to be linked with the health and well-being of the elderly, given the absence of universal social security, an inadequate formal system of care, as well as the gradual erosion of the joint family system. While it is obvious that rising healthcare costs are a reality due to rising longevity, this volume shows how population ageing contributes to rising healthcare costs, along with projected healthcare costs in the future. In addition, this volume addresses issues such as access to finance, financial autonomy and financial inclusion of the elderly. Bringing together empirical explorations of prevailing realities and mechanisms that shape the well-being/ill-being of the elderly in India, this volume will be indispensible for students and scholars of economics, development studies and health and wellness studies.

Migration is a natural outcome when society faces a shortage of resources or opportunities. While migration in India has been studied extensively, these discussions often do not include one of the most important stakeholders involved-young people. Youth constitute a valuable human capital resource base for India, and migration of young people has become more frequent as a result of neoliberal policies, coupled with social, political, economic and demographic conditions. Youth Migration in Emerging India focuses on this challenging and neglected aspect of Indian society. Although marriage-based migration dominates youth migration in India, this volume focuses on the significance of education and employment-related migration through the lens of the youth. Relying on primary data collected from the field and secondary data from sources like the Census of India and National Sample Survey Office, the authors analyse the causes of youth migration and its impacts on the Indian economy. Young people opt for migration to improve their economic prospects, and the demand for skilled youth is growing. In this context, young people themselves become a pull factor for migration, as the remittances they send home improve both their economic prospects and the Indian economy. The book focuses on several aspects of youth migration, ranging from distress migration to Indian cities for survival to the voluntary move made by affluent, urban Indians for higher education abroad. Also studied are the latest National Youth Policies of the government, which identifies migrant youth as a target group. An important contribution to the area of youth and migration studies, this volume will be useful to students and scholars of migration studies, development studies, public policy and planning and policy think tanks.

Covering and Explaining Conflict in Civil Society is a collection of essays that highlights issues of ethics specifically in journalism of conflict. The media takes an active interest in reporting cases of conflict as political unrest has a direct and immediate impact on people s lives. In the first part, this volume presents four such reportages; one each from Libya, Pakistan, Turkey and Khairlanji (India). Devoted to reportage, these case studies raise an important question: How far can a reporter prescribe and opine in her reportage? The authors explain, by their own example, the need for a journalist to be aware of this question during live reportage. The second part of this volume is a critical look at the contemporary media scene in India. The authors draw our attention to the vibrant civil society that shook the administration when allegations of corruption cropped up. Citing instances of corruption within the media, the essays delineate the conflict between vested interest and ethics in journalism. In the concluding part, the authors focus on social media, as a new medium of civil society, playing an active role in the reportage of conflict through clicks and shares. The essays here provoke the reader to ask if journalistic ethics do find a place in social media at all! Presenting case-studies, theory and arguments, this volume is invaluable for students of journalism and mass communication. It will also be of interest to the lay reader.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This book is an extremely topical and hard-hitting account of the dangerous realities that threaten the very survival of the Hindu nation. Radha Rajan draws on the historical lessons of the dismemberment of the Soviet Union to interpret-citing documents in the public domain-the steady dismemberment of our own nation during the freedom struggle and right down to today, all with the active collaboration of the Indian political and intellectual elite of the time. The avowed objective remains the erasure of the Hindu nation and, quoting chapter and verse, she establishes Gandhi as directly responsible for the Partition of 1947. She shows how his corrosive legacy, suicidal for Hindus, still perverts our polity and she concludes her analysis with a warning and a hope.

The temple is the focus for all aspects of everyday life in the Hindu community-religious, cultural, educational and social. It played many roles in society as place of worship, centre of learning, store house of state property, meeting place, court of justice, promoter of fine arts, etc. The temple also served as an agency for easier and more efficient extraction of surplus from the peasants in the agrarian economy and this contributed to the extension of agriculture. In the course of such extension the temples speed up the process of disintegration of tribal society and its reorganization as a caste society. In the newly formed caste society, the temple served as an integrating player linking the high and low in service. The temples maintained the morality of the society and religious faith of the people. The temples of medieval south India had been a great strengthening factor in keeping the people united and played a vital role as the centre of all social activities. The temples had given employment to a lot of people, as they needed people for the construction, maintenance and day to day function. They also employed the architects for the construction of temples, the artisans for the art and craft activities, sculptors and many servants for the engaging in various activities of the temple. The temples were also a place of religious conversation and musical discussions. All these have facilitated the propagation of religion, music, dance and other fine arts in the society. This edited volume contains 20 articles covers different aspects of South Indian Temple and Society, which include the following facets like: Power and Legitimacy of Medieval South Indian Temples; Role of Religion in the Chola State and Society; Science behind Temple Worship; Cultural Aspects of Hindu Temples; Administrators and other Functionaries of the Hindu Temples; Temple Women; Socio-political Dimension of Early Kerala Temples; Religious Endowments; Role of Temple in Agrarian Expansions; Socio-cultural Facets of Vijayanagar Temp.
