Tight and nice first edition of this biography of the American naval officer (1809-90) most remembered for commanding Union ironclad ships in attacks on Fort Fisher in December 1864 and January 1865 -- which helped in his promotion to rear admiral in 1866! Rather uncommon.

Duer has added a notation beneath the presentation after putting an asterisk next to R. Admiral: "O very great error!! Seeing that I was not 23 years of age when I left the service with the rank of ensign, which was the highest attained by me. WAD."
