Hardback. Size 9.5 x 12.5 inches. In decorative green cloth covers with gilt to spine and front. With pictorial endpapers. Hard card slip case. A modern reproduction of the 1912 original. In very good condition with slipcase. Slight shelfwear to slipcase. 150pp. With 12 colour plates and 22 b&w line drawings by Arthur Rackham Preface by David Wootton. Before the time of Wendy, Tinker Bell and Captain Hook, before even Never-Never Land itself, Peter Pan was an ordinary baby. All babies, having been birds before they were humans, were 'a little wild during the first few weeks, and very itchy about the shoulders, where their wings used to be' But, unlike other babies, Peter decided to escape and flew away over the rooftops back to Kensington Gardens. But it was by no means a simple matter for Peter to resume life as a bird and, as is pointed out to him early on by Solomon Caw, his destiny is to be a 'Betwixt-and Between' From being trapped on the island in the Serpentine and escaping in a boat made out of a bird's nest, to learning the ways of the fairies whose best trick is to pretend to be something else, usually a flower Peter Pan's adventures in the enchanted world of 'the little people' are where the legend began. Peter Pan was created by the novelist and playwright J. M. Barrie (1860-1937) to preserve the memory of a younger brother who had died as a child. After the phenomenal success of the stage version, in which Barrie introduced the characters and settings we know so well today, Hodder and Stoughton commissioned Arthur Rackham in 1905 to illustrate a special gift edition of the original stories. The twelve colour plates in this facsimile edition, together with the black-and-white line drawings, are among Rackham's finest and a reminder of why the Edwardian years were the golden age of book illustration. Brilliantly capturing the landscape of the gardens, with their broad tree-lined avenues, shimmering lakes and romantic glades, Rackham fills this Arcadia with a dazzling array of fairies and spirits, who dance on spiders' webs, argue with the birds and make mischief with the park signs.

First Rackham edition, first US printing. Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was the most popular Christmas gift book for 1906 and was highly successful commercially. The story of Peter Pan had its genesis in Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, in which the central chapters tell of a child "who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old. and flew back to Kensington Gardens". Barrie developed this story into a play (first performed in 1904, but not published until 1928), this book of 1906 (the first to appear with the name of the character in the title) and, finally, the novel Peter and Wendy which was published in 1911. As noted by Fred Gettings, the "publication and quality" of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens "was a sure sign that Rackham had arrived, and was now to remain as one of the leading illustrators in a wide field of book titles". The Pittsburgh Post noted, on 17 September 1906, that "October will see the publication by the Scribners of Barrie's. Peter Pan. Arthur Rackham has prepared the colored pictures for the book". It appears, therefore, that UK and US editions had a similar publication date. On 5 October 1906, The Times Literary Supplement reported the announcement of publication from the English publishers and a review appeared in that paper on 14 December 1906. Fred Gettings, Arthur Rackham, London, Studio Vista, 1975, p. 112; Riall p. 74; The Pittsburgh Post, 17 September 1906, p. 6; Times Literary Supplement, 5 October 1906, p. 338; Times Literary Supplement, 14 December 1906, p. 418. Quarto. Original green cloth, spine and front cover lettered in gilt, decoration on front cover in gilt, brown endpapers. Colour frontispiece and 49 coloured plates mounted on brown paper, with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Arthur Rackham. Extremities a little rubbed and bumped, small holes to front joint, some light soiling, occasional light finger-soiling: a very good copy.

Best Rackham edition, originally published in 1906. This edition is enlarged with a new frontispiece and seven full-page drawings that are not in the first edition. The plates were bound in sequence with the story for the first time. "Mr Barrie's touch of fantasy, homely but eerie too, is admirably reflected. Moreover, the pictures are simple, and are clearly and firmly drawn" (Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art). "The delightful colour and black-and-white illustrations are Arthur Rackham at his best, and, perhaps, no other artist could have been so happy in his results. Mr Rackham's work is such that one is always finding charming little unexpected surprises in out-of-the-way corners of his pictures. These illustrations are not to be merely glanced at, but carefully studied to derive the full amount of pleasure from them" (The Bystander). The Bystander, 4 December 1912, p. 550; Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art, 8 December 1912, Supplement, p. iv. Quarto. Finely bound in full green morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, raised bands, front cover decorated in gilt, floral dentelles in gilt, marbled endpaers, gilt edges. Colour frontispiece and 49 mounted colour plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white illustrations in the text, all by Rackham. Minor scratch to rear cover, minor splitting to front hinge, slight browning to free endpapers: a near-fine copy.

Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens was first published in 1906, in both deluxe and trade editions, with the plates gathered at the end. The "New Edition" of 1912 is in larger format, with new illustrations dated 1912, the colour plates distributed throughout the text, the text entirely reset (readily identifiable by running headlines in a large italic typeface), uncoloured head- and tailpieces to each chapter, a calligraphic title page printed in two colours without the word "Limited" after the publishers' name, and with untrimmed fore and lower edges. In the first impression, the map of Kensington Gardens is printed across the page, with a blank verso. Later impressions of the New Edition have the title page printed in black only and the company name given as "Hodder & Stoughton Limited": these were presumably issued after December 1919, when the firm was incorporated as a limited company. The edges of later impressions are trimmed straight all round, resulting in a very slightly shorter book. This copy comes from another edition, superficially similar to the later impressions of the 1912 New Edition, but with the text now restored to the original 1906 setting, distinguished by the headlines printed all in capital letters, but enhanced by the addition of the head- and tailpieces from the 1912 edition. The map of Kensington Gardens is printed perpendicular, with the uncoloured illustration of Kensington Gardens on the verso. This appears to be the final form of the book as it continued to be issued by Hodder and Stoughton throughout the 1920s. The price-clipped jacket has the illustration entitled "A chrysanthemum heard her, and said pointedly, 'Hoity-toity, what is this?'" mounted on the front panel. The box has the illustration "An afternoon when the Gardens were white with snow" mounted on the lid. Laid in to the book is a four-page folding advert for Hodder and Stoughton's illustrated books, undated but giving the price of Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens bound in cloth, with 50 colour plates, as 15/- net. Latimore & Haskell, p. 40; Riall, p. 114. Quarto. Original green cloth, titles and pictorial decoration to spine and front board gilt, plain endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. In the original publisher's pictorial box. Tipped-in colour frontispiece and 49 coloured plates with captioned tissue guards, black and white drawings in the text, by Rackham. Gift inscription to front free endpaper dated 1931, touch of rubbing to corners and ends of spine, in the price clipped dust jacket, wear to extremities, chipping to corners, chip to top end of spine with tape on verso, spine toned, light soiling to panels. An excellent copy.

Signed limited edition, number 263 of 500 copies signed by the artist, of this acknowledged classic of the "Golden Age" of book illustration. It also represents the first ever appearance of Peter Pan in the title of a book. Following publication, Barrie wrote to Rackham stating he had "shed glory" on the text and requested they continue to collaborate (cited in Hudson, p. 66). The story of Peter Pan had its genesis in Barrie's 1902 novel The Little White Bird, in which the central chapters tell of a child "who escaped from being a human when he was seven days old. and flew back to Kensington Gardens". "Its publication and quality was a sure sign that Rackham had arrived, and was now to remain as one of the leading illustrators in a wide field of book titles" (Gettings, p. 112). First trade edition, first printing. Original russet cloth with gilt titles to the spine and upper board, along with a gilt illustration. With beautiful colour illustration plates by Arthur Rackham. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with some rubbing to the extremities and a mark to the lower board and spine. The contents, with a short closed tear and a small contemporary inscription to the half title and some light foxing to the prelims and infrequently throughout, along with the odd finger mark to the margins, are otherwise clean and bright throughout. All 50 plates, one at the front as the frontispiece and the other 49 grouped together at the back, are present with their captioned tissue guards and in fine condition without corner creases or marks. Peter Pan first appeared in the chapters 13 to 18 of Barrie's 1902 novel "The Little White Bird". Barrie extracted the story and following the success of his Rip Van Winkle illustrations, through The Leicester Galleries, asked Arthur Rackham to provide the illustrations. The resulting first edition of Peter Pan In Kensington Gardens became not only a highlight of golden age book illustration, but for many, their first introduction to "the boy who wouldn't grow up". A 'new edition' with Arthur Rackham illustrations. Publisher's original green cloth with title titles and illustration to the upper board and spine, in dustwrapper. Illustrated with 50 tipped in colour plates, each with a captioned tissue guard, 8 full page black and white drawings, and smaller line drawings throughout the text. A superb fine copy, the binding square and firm, the cloth and gilt bright and fresh. The contents, with a bookseller's label to the upper left corner of the front pastedown (hidden by the dustwrapper flap) are otherwise clean throughout and without foxing, inscriptions or stamps. Complete with near fine dustwrapper that is a little rubbed at the extremities and mildly toned to the spine. The underside has a thin strip of archival reinforcement at the head of the spine and upper fold corners. A beautiful example. The artist's highlight and one of the most beautifully illustrated books of the Golden Age. First published in 1912, the 'new edition' of Peter Pan is considered the best Rackham edition, with a new colour frontispiece and 7 new black and white illustrations not present in the 1906 edition. It is also notable for being the first of the 50 plate editions to bind the plates throughout the text. The book remained in print this large format up until 1929; the present example must date from 1919 or later as it lists the publisher Hodder and Stoughton as a limited company.
