Many art experts and connoisseurs have indeed devoted their attention to this period. However, they often have concentrated on the influence exerted on Japanese art and culture by the Dutch trading post on Deshima. From the pages that follow it will appear that, conversely, Dutch and other Western arts and crafts were strongly influenced by the Japanese. As early as the beginning of the seventeenth century, contacts between the Republic and Japan led to a great interest in Japanese art and the imitation of that art in the Netherlands.
