Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Solid-state physics has for many years been one of the largest and most active areas of research in physics, and the physics of metals and semiconductors has in turn been one of the largest and most active areas in solid-state physics. Despite this, it is an area in which new and quite unexpected phenomena - such as the quantum Hall effect - are still being discovered, and in which many things are not yet fully understood. It forms an essential part of any undergraduate physics course. A number of textbooks on solid-state physics have appeared over the years and, because the subject has now grown so large, the books too have usually been large. By aiming at a more limited range of topics, I have tried in this book to cover them within a reasonably small compass. But I have also tried to avoid the phrase 'It can be shown that. . . ', as far as possible, and instead to explain to the reader just why things are the way they are; and sometimes this takes a little longer. I hope that some readers at least will find this approach helpful. 1 The free-electron model 1. 1 THE CLASSICAL DRUDE THEORY The characteristic properties of metals and semiconductors are due to their conduction electrons: the electrons in the outermost atomic shells, which in the solid state are no longer bound to individual atoms, but are free to wander through the solid.

Bensley for his notable achievements in the field of histochemistry. This special symposium presented at the University of Chicago on November 13, 1942, was limited to the theme of the physical and chemical organization of the cytoplasm, the principal subject of the investigations of Dr. Bensley and his students for the past decade. Most biologists will find this volume of especial value and interest for in this collection of papers is presented not only an historical account of the rapid progress made in recent years in this field of fundamental knowledge but the lines along which new discoveries may be expected in the future. Students of cellular biology who have been puzzled by the speed, orderliness and rhythmicity of cellular processes and the unique physical and chemical properties of the cytoplasm will find here significant information regarding structural, chemical and functional relationships. Of particular interest to the morphologist is 1) the account of the isolation and chemical analysis of mitochondria, 2) the separation of the fibrous proteins ellipsin ahd plasmosin which are apparently responsible for the stability of cell structure and the sol-gel transformations in the cytoplasm respectively, 3) the discovery and separation of submicroscopic glycogen particulates and 4) the isolation and chemical analysis of the submicroscopic particulates of Claude. Doubtless the physiologist, pathologist, biochemist and physical chemist will find material of equal interest and profit."-A. A. Knouff ; ownership signature of eminent Emory neurologist Dr. Marion Hines; FINE. Book.

The team was tasked to perform an independent business case analysis of storage consolidation alternatives for NNSA's Pantex plant. Further, the alternatives considered utilizing interim storage at the Savannah River Site, metering the flow of weapons from the Department of Defense to the Department of Energy, and declaring more pits as excess to expedite closure of Zone 4. The primary mission of the Pantex Plant is the assembly, disassembly, testing, and evaluation of nuclear weapons in support of the NNSA stockpile stewardship program. Pantex also performs research and development in conventional high explosives and serves as an interim storage site for plutonium pits removed from dismantled weapons. The Pantex Plant is the primary United States nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility that aims to maintain the safety, security and reliability of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile. The facility is located on a 16,000 acre site 17 miles northeast of Amarillo, Texas. The plant is managed and operated for the United States Department of Energy by Consolidated Nuclear Security. Consolidated Nuclear Security, LLC (CNS) is composed of member companies Bechtel National, Inc., Leidos, Inc., Orbital ATK, Inc, and SOC LLC, with Booz Allen Hamilton, Inc. as a teaming subcontractor. CNS also operates the Y-12 National Security Complex. In den WarenkorbONE: Brooks's letter to Leitch Ritchie: 4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. Very good, on lightly-aged paper. He thanks him for his 'kind and courteous communication', and is pleased that 'the article I sent seems to you adapted to the purpose'. Brooks has, he explains, 'availed myself of your suggestions in reference to the additions'. He continues with references to Vauxhall and 'The Highland Lamp'. 'I need hardly say, however, that I trust you will, by excision or any other process, render this, or any other article of mine you may accept, what is most desirable in a business point of view - a few years of managing and being managed teaches one that, after all, that is the point, though before attaining that piece of prosaic wisdom ones vanity gets fearfully scraped.' TWO: 'No. 1' of Brooks's novel 'Sooner or Later'. 48pp., 8vo. Frontispiece by George Du Maurier. In original pink printed wraps. Advertisement leaf, with specimen pages, for 'Thorley's Illustrated Farmers Almanack' tipped in at rear. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, in chipped and worn wraps with spine repaired with tape. THREE: Two Autograph Notes Signed by G. E. S. Chambers. 1p., 8vo. On letterhead of W. & R. Chambers, Limited, Publishers, Edinburgh and London. The first note, dated from Edinburgh in July 1923, reads 'This copy of Shirley Brooks' Sooner or Later, in original parts, came from the library of the late Mr R. Y. Naismith, Edinburgh, & was acquired by me, with others of his books, from his executors. This is the only copy in parts that I have ever met with, and is of extreme rarity. | G. E. S. Chambers'. Beneath this, on the same page, is the second note, dated 25 March 1932. It reads: 'The enclosed letter from Shirley Brooks to Leitch Ritchie was written in 1849, and refers to certain contributions to Chambers's Journal. It was found by me among papers & M.S.S. belonging to the above year, & must have been written some time before Shirley Brooks became a regular contributor to Punch. | G.E.S.C.'.
