While it also concerns itself with apparently banal issues like popular movies or bands, war, politics or nuclear power do not make an exception in the series' content.Mick Broderick points out, that 'while many episodes ostensibly do not touch on nuclear themes, the ever- present influence and immanence of the atomic age pervades The Simpsons like a thematic half- life whose motifs contaminate the multi- layered, intertextual narratives of each episode, often as satire.'At this background, Anne Washburn's decision to take The Simpsons, of all things, as the one part of popular culture that survives inside the people's memories throughout a nuclear apocalypse, seems even more peculiar and ironic. But that's just what happens in Washburn's 'Mr. Burns - A post- electric play'. The electric grid is destroyed and people have to adapt to a world without telephones, television, electric stoves or radiators. They have to revert to older ways of engagement, like storytelling, but instead of higher literature they reminisce about parts of popular culture everyone remembers.The following paper therefore will analyse Anne Washburn's play in regard to the way popular culture is represented in her post- apocalyptic world. Especially the conception of art and aesthetics seemed to experience a time of change, reshaping the way in which art was received and the role of the artist in comparison to the spectator.Still, as art seemed to be in a state of carination, the public reception of new artistic attempts was not always positive. Especially the representation of morality and sexuality caused ground for public discontent. A connection of morality, aesthetics and sexuality in The Picture of Dorian Gray that seems to be of high importance for the novel. This paper, therefore, is going to analyse the novel regarding these aspects and the way they influence each other, illuminating whether morality is really depicted as subordinate to an artistic effect or if it is needed in order for the story to advance.

In addition, it will distinguish why elements of horror should be part of literature for child readers.The first part will have a look at different aspects of children's literature as such, starting with the history of its development and an attempt to define it as a genre, taking into consideration the relationship between child readers and adult writers. This part will supply a general overview of problems the genre's definition causes, as well as the discrepancies between the child reader's needs and what adults want children to require from literature.The second part then focuses on horror literature, including Gothic Horror and fairy tales, before looking at horror literature for children. In this part, a determination of what constitutes horror in literature is made before the terminology of children's literature is broadened to the field of horror.The third part of this work takes a closer look at aspects of horror in literature for children, analysing different elements like child fears, danger and monsters in selected books. It deconstructs what can be perceived as scary in books for young readers, how frightening elements are incorporated into literature for children, using well- known books from authors like Lewis Carroll, J. M. Barrie or Roald Dahl as representatives, while in the end looking at positive effects horror in literature for young readers has on a child.

Es wird jedoch zu einer Lebensaufgabe, da sich ihm stetig Widerstände entgegenstellen.Die Diskrepanz zwischen dem Bürger- und Künstlertum ist ein wiederkehrendes Leitmotiv in den Werken Thomas Manns, der den Umgang mit diesen zwei Welten in verschiedenen Werken verschiedenartig darstellt und somit anhand seiner Figuren divergente Darstellungen der Selbsterfahrung in andersartigen Umwelten liefert.Im Folgenden werde ich mich unter Berücksichtigung relevanter Fachliteratur mit der Selbstbestimmung des Protagonisten der Erzählung 'Der Tod in Venedig', ebenfalls von Thomas Mann verfasst, Gustav von Aschenbach, und mit dem oben bereits erwähnten Tonio Kröger auseinandersetzen. Beide sind bereits ihrer Herkunft halber sowohl mit Merkmalen des Künstlertums geprägt, als auch durch Wurzeln im Bürgertum verankert und stehen somit vor der Aufgabe sich in selbigen Geflechten zu integrieren. Es stellen sich die Fragen, ob eine genaue Einordnung in eines der Umfelder möglich ist und welche Probleme sich den Protagonisten als Künstler, die vom Bürgertum beeinflusst werden, eröffnen. Weiterhin wird zu beachten sein, auf welche Weisen die Figuren mit den zwei Welten, und den in ihnen enthaltenen Möglichkeiten, umgehen.
