Manuskript / Papierantiquität
An interesting artefact from the early days of Akido in the United Kingdom. Akido was introduced into the UK 1955 by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei at the Hut Dojo in Hillingdon. His first student was Ken Williams. In 1957 Haydn Foster joined the Hut and continued to teach there until his death in 2011. The Renown Society was formed in 1966 by Williams after Abbe returned to Japan. This was the original society teaching Akido in the UK. The Renown Society broke up in 1969. 4pp., foolscap 8vo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with rusted staples attaching the four leaves, which have caused damage to the opposing margin of the final leaf. The first page is headed 'Renown Akido Society' (with sub-heading 'Irimi is a special movement of Akido'). The second is headed 'Form: Various Forms of Attacking' (with other heading 'Other Forms'); the third 'C Group Applications' (with other heading 'D Group Control of the Arms'); the fourth 'How to Practice' (with other headings 'Preparation' and 'Preparation of Akido'). The first page is arranged in three columns, giving literal translations of Japanese terms, and carries pencil annotation to the third of the columns, as for example to the entry for 'Kaiten-Nage' ('Kaite : spiral | Nage : projection'): '1st R H. Turn anti-clockwise ducking under. Pull down and pass L. H. between R. H. & partner, brushing off, and taking partner RH in your LH Grasp neck with RH for control. Bring RH right back and give final push.'.

Manuskript / Papierantiquität
An interesting letter regarding the early cultivation of bananas in London. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight nicking to one edge. Neatly written over nine lines. Reads: 'Sir Everard Home is much obliged to Messrs. Laddiges for a present of some very fine Bananas, which were quite ripe, and had a flavour Sir Everard had no idea that they ever could acquire in this Climate. He mentioned yesterday to Mr Eyton with astonishment who said they had fruited at Kew, but not He believed to such perfection'. 'Eyton' is probably the naturalist Thomas Campbell Eyton (1809-1880), a friend and correspondent of Charles Darwin. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.

A nice set of documents relating to the London émigré art scene. A copy of the engraved portrait to which these two items refer, titled 'Louis Joseph de Bourbon, prince de Condé, prince du sang', is BM P&D 1850,0211.17, and carries the information "M.de de Tott pinx.", "F. Bartolozzi RA sculp.", and her details, as publisher: "London Publish'd by M.de de Tott Octo. 1 1802". De Tott's original painting is in the Musée Condé in Paris. See Bartolozzi's entry in the Oxford DNB and the second (1885) edition of Tuer's monograph on him. The two items are attached with a wafer at top inner corner.
