North Eastern region of India is part of both Eastern Himalaya as well as Indo-Burma biodiversity Hotspots and comprising of the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. Bio-geographically, this region has tropical valleys, temperate habitats, alpine meadows and cold deserts. Manipur state is listed in the top ten hotspot biodiversity rich zones of world famous 34 biodiversity hotspots and considered as the nature's paradise for its wild fauna and flora including rich heritage of wild orchids in particular. This sate is guarded by nine ranges of bluish green hills with rich biodiversity and endemism. The state is bounded on the north by Nagaland, the south by Mizoram and Chin hills of Myanmar, the east by Chindwin district of Myanmar and the west by Cachar and North Cachar districts of Assam. The major portion of the sate consists of hill ranges with a north and south general trend including flat and elevated valley of an area of about 1545 sq. km with the elevation ranging from 550-3600 m above the mean sea level. The upper tertiary continues through Mapum and passes through the Kopamedza range to the Angami Nagaland. Lime stone of Kasom range and Nungshongkhong valley are of cretaceous age. Soil is recent alluvium in the valley. At the base of the hills it is derived from sandstone rocks. Manipur contains numerous streams, rivers and lakes. The main rivers of Manipur are Imphal, Iril, Thoubal, Nambul and Nambol. The Loktak is the largest fresh water lake with an area of about 100 sq km and is one of the major water reservoirs in the state. The edges are swampy or are floating beds of reeds and aquatic plants. Towards the southern end, there are some small islands which rise steeply from the water. Geographically, the sate has diverse forests including tropical to subtropical and temperate with rich floral diversity as well as high degree of endemism which includes valuable medicinal plants. Among plant species, 2795 species of Dicotyledons and 1232 species of Monocotyledons are found in Manipur. Among these, 117 species are endemic to this region. Due to global warming and climate change, the population of many species is facing threat of survival in their natural habitats. The state is inhabited by numerous ethnic groups, practising their traditional healthcare and using a large number of wild plants for the treatment of various ailments. Therefore, it is important to have complete 'Flora of Manipur-A Pictorial Guide'. The Institute of Bioresource & Sustainable Development and Botanical Survey of India jointly took this initiative to develop a document for publishing the 'Flora of Manipur-A Pictorial Guide' which enlists the rich plant wealth of the state. This is the first if its kind such a document is being developed on flora of Manipur. This book lists 4012 plant taxa from Manipur under 1405 genera in 225 families. The document is supplemented with 1300 photographs depicting 1200 taxa, which will help in identifying the plants. This document consolidated the updated scientific literature about the Flora of Manipur and will fulfil the knowledge gap in better understanding the plants present in Manipur. We thank all the team members from Botanical Survey of India (BSI) Kolkata and the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD), Impal, Manipur for their hard work in developing this document.
