On the 8 x 13cm cover of the envelope. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with loss at head and to top right-hand corner from removal from an album, traces of which adhere to the reverse. Playfair's signature ('Lyon Playfair') in the bottom left-hand corner is unnaffected, and the address, also in his hand, reads: 'Messrs George Routledge & Son | Broadway | Ludgate Hill | E.C.' The orange circular franking postmark is incomplete, and reads: 'LON | OFF | PAID | B | 9 FE 86'. …

On a gilt-edged piece of card, 13 x 11.5 cm., with rounded edges. In good condition, lightly aged. The illustration by 'E M W' on one side is printed in silver, yellow, light blue, grey and brown, and shows a snowy country scene with two tiny figures beneath a shining sun on a stone bridge over a stream. Captioned 'The Joy of Christmas be in your heart.' Cowan's eight-line poem, on the other side, is printed in grey, in variety of gothic fonts. It begins: 'Only its best and brightest history | May Memory relate you! | But bright and lovely tho' the Past may be, | May brighter Days await you!' The letter would appear to concern both of the books which Shaw published with Routledge in 1913: 'The Encyclopaedia of the Poultry Yard' and 'The Encyclopaedia of the Kennel'. He begins by explaining that he is finally sending in 'title page, & dedication, which I should have sent in earlier had I not been awaiting Mr T[?]s permission to dedicate the book to him. I only received his letter this afternoon.' He next turns to the illustrations, regarding which he was 'under the belief that you had arranged with Mr Fowler to endeavour to obtain some of dogs for you'. Shaw cannot find any individuals 'to pay the price asked for illustrations of their animals. Whether it is that times are bad, or that there are now so many illustrated papers in existence, I dont know, but the fact remains that I have been unable to get the price.' He will be seeing Fowler, and feels 'sanguine' that he 'can get some advertisements. When I last saw him he was waiting for some specimen pages.' He asks for 'pulls of all the Poultry blocks you have in hand', and undertakes to 'see that the number is completed'. The author of this letter is not to be confused with the cricketer Vero Shaw (1854-1905), latterly Vero Shaw-Mackenzie.…

The only copy of this item on OCLC WorldCat is in the Canadian National Archives. An attractive and characteristic piece of late nineteenth-century French printing. The present copy is 14 + [1] pp, 16mo. With frontispiece and eight illustrations and vignettes. Stitched booklet (13 x 7.5 cm). In wraps printed in black and red. In fair condition, lightly aged, in grubby wraps. Tipped-in before the back cover, is a two-page 'Specimen of the text and illustrations on vellum of the paper-mills of Le Marais', on a bifolium, with a page of text on the reverse of the first leaf and a full-page illustration on the second. On reverse of title: 'The illustrations in this catalogue are taken from the books that have already appeared in La Petite Collection Guillaume'. Colophon reads: 'THESE BOOKS | have been composed, engraved, printed, stitched and bound in cloth at the printing office of Edouard Guillaume 105, boulevard Brune, 105 | PARIS'. The text begins: 'The highest tribute that could be offered to La Petite Collection Guillaume is the manner in which it has been imitated both in Europe and America.' Later on the announcement is made that 'Messrs. George Routledge & Sons believe that the great Anglo-American public have sufficiently good taste not to support imitations of this kind, and therefore intend to issue in English the original Guillaume Collection produced in the same marvellous manner as the French Edition.' Details of forthcoming titles and price are given, on a plan of two volumes a month. The illustrators are named as 'Conconi, Fournier (Grand Prix de Rome), Gambard, Marold, Mittis, Rossi, and others'. The final two pages carry a list of 'Volumes in Preparation'.…

8vo, 2 pp. Good, though a little grubby on the reverse. Printed down the left hand margin of the recto is a long list headed 'Printers and Publishers of Illustrated Guides to'. Printed in large letters at the centre of the letterhead is 'Shropshire: Historical and Biographical', but there is no record of this title being published, or of any volume on Shropshire by Mates & Sons. From the context it appears that Lumley had a hand in Frederick John Snell's 'Devonshire, historical, descriptive, biographical', published by Mate & Sons in 1907. Lumley acknowledges receipt of the 'Memoir of the late Wm. Hardwicke Esq'. He was 'just on the point of leaving Exeter for Honiton' when it arrived, or would have replied sooner. He promises that the photographs of Turner and Sir Wyke Bayliss will be 'safely & duly returned'. His 'present address in Devonshire' is 'only of short duration untill [sic] all nobility, Members of Parliament &c have been interviewed'.…

On one side of a piece of paper roughly 24 x 14.5 cm. With card backing. Good, though lightly aged. Headed by the Royal warrant, the top-half of the handbill features, in a variety of types and point sizes, the announcement of Tuck and Sons' intention to award 'Upwards of 4,000 prizes, of the value of 3,000 guineas, and a number of judges' diplomas', with Besant and Stone as judges. The lower part has two columns featuring fifteen testimonials, by newspapers ranging from 'Windsor and Eton Gazette' to the 'Sheffield Telegraph'. She begins by explaining that at her 'interview with Mr. Bell on the 8th. he suggested an alteration in an important sentence, giving me the alternative of taking the MS. home with me or of correcting the sentence in the proofs. At the time I thought the latter course would be the best, but it occurs to me that it would save expence if the correction was made now.' She asks Cazenove to 'ask Mr. O'Connor if he would kindly alter the words in accordance with the enclosed [not present]'. She indicates the relevant sentence, adding that she assumes that 'it is the publishers who bear the cost of necessary alteration to the proofs, as nothing was said about it in the agreement'. Turning to the problem of 'how it is that a story supposed to be told by a man is written by a woman', she admits that she 'cannot think of anything that would do' by way of introductory explanation. 'Perhaps the title might read - | The Tramping Methodist. | The narrative of Humphrey Lyte, Preacher. | I would rather have this than put "edited by" before my name on the title page.' It does not appear that the suggested subtitle was utilised.…

An interesting item, providing valuable biographical information. The Gills were a prominent family of English painters, all puzzingly absent from the Oxford DNB. Edmund Gill's father was the portrait painter Edmund Ward Gill (17941854) and among his brothers were the painters William Ward Gill (18231894) and George Reynolds Gill (18271904). After studying at the Royal Academy he fell under the influence of David Cox. The present item relates to Gill's entry in the 1884 eleventh edition of the Routledge reference work by Thompson Cooper, 'Men of the Time: A Dictionary of Contemporaries'. Both items are 1p, 12mo. On the same grey paper. In good condition, both folded three times for postage. ONE: Covering letter to 'G. Routledge & Sons', with good bold signature 'Edmund Gill'. He is forwarding 'the slip Inclosed to me There is no other Information to add - except that you may like a List of the Principal works exhibited which will occupy about double the space - should you be able to spare it'. TWO: 'List of Principal Works Exhibited by E. Gill'. Signed at foot 'Edmund Gill'. A list of eighteen titles, with places and date of exhibition. Starting with 'Storm on the Court St. Gowain. S. Wales - Royal Academy 1846' to 'The North West Coast of Cornwall - R.A. 1882'. Two items from 'Crystal Pala. Internation Exhibitn', three from the British Institution, and the others from the Royal Academy. Only eleven of the eighteen titles in this list are present on p.462 of the work published in 1884.…

Three 12mo letters in good condition, lightly aged and worn. An interesting batch of letters, in which one minor Victorian poet critiques the work of another, both to the author himself and to his publisher. The three books by Smith which are the subjects of Tupper's letters are 'Olrig Grange' (1872), 'Borland Hall' (1874) and 'Hilda Among the Broken Gods' (1878), all of which were published by the Glasgow publishers James MacLehose and Sons. ONE: Addressed 'To the unnamed Author of Olrig Grange'. 4 December 1874. On letterhead of Albury House, near Guildford. 4pp., 12mo. 'On the human principle of thanks being welcome, when justly due' Tupper sends his 'hearty commendation' of the book. 'These last 2 evenings I have read aloud the whole of this graphic & touching poem to my home-flock, and we all testify to its power & beauty.' A critique of the poem follows, in which he commends 'the deep & true & full feeling of the story', with its 'tender & true catastrophe'. He urges him to 'give the world your name, for no truer poet is extant'. He 'picked up Olrig' by 'mere chance', and is 'delighted & astonished at having chanced upon "an angel unwares"'. TWO: To 'Mr. Mackehose. [sic] | Glasgow'. Letterhead as One above. 12 December 1874. 6pp., 12mo, comprising a main letter of 4pp., and a postscript of 2pp. The postscript, signed 'M F Tupper', is dated from 'Albury. Dec. 12/74.' He has sent him a 'Card of thanks for the gift of Borland Hall: having just read it aloud at 2 eventides to my homeflock I take leave to tell you at once what I think of the poem.' He begins his assessment by describing the poem as 'a work of true genius, evidencing great & varied powers; not a pleasant nor perhaps on the whole so perfect as Olrig Grange, - but more forceful'. He describes some 'blots in the dramatic framework', but does not wish to be 'hypercritical where there is much to praise in every section of the story'. He is happy to see that the 'wellpaired volumes' of 'the Unknown Author' are to be 'supplemented [] by yet a third'. He concludes the main letter by pointing to what he takes to be 'a very masterly & mindful section', as well as 'what I like least'. The two-page postscript concerns 'quite another subject': 'I myself lack a publisher, as thus, - & for aught I know the matter might suit you.' He proceeds to suggest terms for a collection of dramatic pieces: 'Long ago I published a 5 act play "King Alfred", - also another 5 act "Sir Walter Raleigh" - both utterly out of print & wanting reissue: also I have written for the same thin volume when it appears 3 Dramatic Scotch sketches, on Wallace, Bruce, & Claverhouse, to be added.' That MacLehose 'may judge better of the idea', he is sending him 'the parcel registered for safety & to be returned similarly if, after some days perusal &c, you are unwilling to take it'. THREE: [To MacLehose.] Western Villa, North Park, Croydon. 23 June 1878. 3pp., 12mo. The recipient is not named, but is clearly MacLehose (see the reference to 'your author'). Tupper begins: 'My dear Sir, | I always do a thing when I can for fear of no other chance of doing it when I can't so (as tomorrow mg. For a week I shall be in Warwickshire, & thereafter for a fortnight in the Isle of Wight) not to disappoint sine die your unknown Genius of Hilda, I have made a two hours' rush through the book (though it deserves a thoughtful & critical two days') & will now give obiter my judgement of it, as you ask me.' He wonders whether the anonymity of the work might be due on the one hand to the 'autobiographical' nature of the 'whole sad story', and on the other to 'the author's clerical status'. His assessment follows, in which, while praising 'the beauty force & wit & wisdom everywhere disclosed', which all 'prove points of genius & power very various in kind', he doubts whether the book 'can be popular with the many; it is too painful for that, and Hilda with her broken idols, - the chief being her husband her child & herself is an object rather for the intellectual pathologist than for the Spiritual poet'. He considers the 'opening verses to Theodore Martin [] quite a pendant to Tennyson's letter to Maurice'. In conclusion he expresses the hope that he may in future 'thoroughly read the book: meanwhile my daughters will good poets both, - & possibly some day you & your author may hear more from Truly Yours | Martin F. Tupper.'. …

The history of the business is convoluted. See the entries in the Oxford DNB of the founder of the firm John Newbery (c.1713-1767) of St Paul's Churchyard, his son Francis Newbery (1743-1818), and Elizabeth Newbery, née Bryant (c.1746-1821, widow of Francis Newbery (c.1740-1780), cousin of the aforementioned Francis, who, according to Oxford DNB, 'had studied chemistry and medicine but on the death of his father in 1767 he was urged by Samuel Johnson and Robert James to continue the business of publishing and selling patent medicines which he had inherited as the only surviving son. . After the death of Oliver Goldsmith following an overdose of Dr James's fever powder in 1774, Newbery, who had inherited the patent from his father, wrote a lengthy statement in defence of the medicine.' In 1779 he split the business, by relocating the patent medicine branch to another part of St Paul's Churchyard. In 1802 Elizabeth retired and sold the publishing arm to John Harris (1756-1846), who 'continued the Newbery tradition of publishing children's books, selling the business to Grant and Griffith in 1843'. It is said that on the death of Francis Newbery (son of John), 'Colonel John Newberry, succeeded him; at the death of the latter in 1854, Mr. Arthur Le Blanc Newbery and Mr. Lionel Newbery took over the business, which was removed in 1869 to 46 St. Paul's Churchyard. It was in Newgate Street in 1870, and in 1886 (ten years after the present item) the firm described itself as 'export and wholesale medicine proprietors and merchants'. The letter is 2pp, 4to, with the first page on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium, and the second page on the verso of the second leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased. Folded three times for postage. Nice engraved letterhead of '37, Newgate Street, / (Established 125 Years in St. Paul's Church Yard,) / London'. To the left of the text, at the top left-hand corner is an engraved illustration captioned 'John Newbery receiving Oliver Goldsmith on the introduction of Dr. Johnson.' The text is written in a clear secretarial hand, and signed in a shaky hand 'F. Newbery & Sons'. Addressed at the head of the letter to 'The Dean of Carlisle', and beginning 'Very Revd. Sir / We are sorry that we have not replied earlier to your letter, but as we judged it better to let you have a complete translation, we supposed ou would excuse a delay which we could not well avoid. / The Translation in question is as under: -'. There follows a thirty-two line English version of what would appear to be a French letter written to the Dean by 'Saville'. The translated letter concerns the most efficacious way of taking a medication, concluding 'Permit me to thank you heartily for your good and excellent remarks. We are so thankful to meet with a grateful patient!'.…
