The present monograph is devoted mostly to general properties of the ball structures, which simultaneously generalize the coarse structures introduced in the large scale geometry by J. Roe as well as the uniform structures. Chapter 1 contains the definition of the ball structures (baleans), provides their different examples and briefly discusses their connections with coarse structures. The topological coarse structures are also considered. The different morphisms of balleans and coarse spaces are defined and some categories of balleans and coarse structures are introduced. Chapter 2 is devoted to relations between the ball structures and metric structures, important morphisms between metric spaces. Chapter 3 concerns the property of cellularity of balleans and contains the notion of asymptotic dimension of balleans in the spirit of Gromov. It turns out that cellularity can be described in terms of asymptotic dimension zero, which makes it close to the non-Archimedean (ultrametric) spaces. Chapter 4 is devoted to the property of normality. In Chapters 5 and 6 the graph balleans and the group balleans are investigated. In Chapter 7 the functions on balleans which are slowly oscillating with respect to given filter are studied. The counterpart of the Higson corona in the context of balleans is investigated in Chapter 8. Some cardinal invariants of balleans are introduced and discussed in Chapter 9. The Conference follows those organized in Peniscola (1995), Amsterdam (1993), Elba (1991), Uzhgorod (1990) . The present one has been organized by a group of physicists working in different fields at the University Joseph Fourier of Grenoble who find in this occasion a good opportunity to join their efforts. The core of the organizing committee was nevertheless located at the Institut des Sciences Nucleaires, whose physicists, especially in the group of theoretical physics, have a long tradition in the domain. The Few Body Conference has a natural tendency to be a theoretical one - the exchange about the methods used in different fields is the common point to most participants. It also has a tendency to be a hadronic physics one - the corresponding physics community, perhaps due to the existence of experimen tal facilities devoted to the study of few body systems, is better organized. In preparing the scientific program, we largely relied on the advices of the Inter national Advisory Committee, while avoiding to follow these trends too closely.

Further, it provides algorithmic methods for the construction of dual and tight wavelet frames with a desirable approximation order, namely compactly supported wavelet frames, which are commonly required by engineers. It particularly focuses on methods of constructing them. Wavelet bases and frames are actively used in numerous applications such as audio and graphic signal processing, compression and transmission of information. They are especially useful in image recovery from incomplete observed data due to the redundancy of frame systems. The construction of multivariate wavelet frames, especially bases, with desirable properties remains a challenging problem as although a general scheme of construction is well known, its practical implementation in the multidimensional setting is difficult.Anotherimportant feature of wavelet is symmetry. Different kinds of wavelet symmetry are required in various applications, since they preserve linear phase properties and also allow symmetric boundary conditions in wavelet algorithms, which normally deliver better performance. The authors discuss how to provide H-symmetry, where H is an arbitrary symmetry group, for wavelet bases and frames. The book also studies so-called frame-like wavelet systems, which preserve many important properties of frames and can often be used in their place, as well as their approximation properties. The matrix method of computing the regularity of refinable function from the univariate case is extended to multivariate refinement equations with arbitrary dilation matrices. This makes it possible to find the exact values of the Hölder exponent of refinable functions and to make a very refine analysis of their moduli of continuity.
