(Quote from page 4, Chapter I). ***The novel is set in the 1830s at Rugby School, a public school for boys which Hughes attended from 1834 to 1842 and is based on the author's brother George Hughes. George Arthur, one of the book's main characters, is thought to be based on Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. Tom's life also resembles the author's, in that the final event of his school career was a cricket match. The novel also has the character of Dr. Thomas Arnold (1795-1842), who was the actual headmaster of Rugby School from 1828 to 1841. Tom Brown's School Days has been adapted for film and television and influenced the developing genre of British school novels which began in the nineteenth century and led to fictional schools such as Billy Bunter's Greyfriars School, Mr Chips' Brookfield, St. Trinian's, and Harry Potter's Hogwarts. A sequel, Tom Brown at Oxford, was published in 1861. Tom Brown's School Days also contains an account of a game of rugby football, the variant of football played at Rugby School (with many differences from the modern forms). The great success of the novel help spread the popularity of the sport beyond Rugby school. ***An early Victorian illustrated edition of Tom Brown's School Days in its original cloth-covered boards in complete condition. Of interest to collectors of Victorian children's literature and illustrated books and the illustrations of Arthur Hughes (a Pre-Raphaelite painter and book illustrator) and Sydney Prior Hall (Victorian portrait painter and illustrator) and the wood-engravings by J.D. Cooper. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging.

About the book >.>.> Arthur Prior's Formal Logic has been familiar to students for twenty years, but the historical section that was originally meant to accompany it was never published. In this book P. T. Geach and A. J. P. Kenny have selected from those parts of the material that were not superseded by Prior's later publica- tions a self-contained study of the philosophical prehistory of contemporary logic. Like Prior's early work Logic and the Basis of Ethics the material here presented is both historical and critical: Prior was not concerned to decide for us the controverted questions of logical doctrine which he discusses. He may be compared to an experienced judge sum- ming up in a complicated civil action: the case for each side is clearly and fairly presented, and although on some issues the summing up amounts to a pretty clear direction of the jury, the jurymen themselves are left to decide the issues. The value of such an historical survey is to be measured by the ill effects of ignoring our predecessors' labours. The course o.

Arthur Hughes and Sydney Prior Hall (illustrator). 1892 sixth edition hardback A semi autobiographical novel by Thomas Hughes. The story is set at Rugby School, a public school for boys, in the 1830s; Hughes attended Rugby School from 1834 to 1842. Helping to launch the genre of school novels in the Victorian era, this would have been one of the most often reprinted english classics. This copy is anything but common; being covered in red leather with gilt stamped border, and 5 raised bands to spine, not forgetting the marbled end papersand charming illustrations by Arthur Hughes and Sydney Prior Hall. It is all the more appropriate this copy was a school prize to an outstanding pupil; with inscription from a Headmaster dated 1894 inside blank page and gold stamped school emblem to front cover. Interior otherwise clean and all pages tight within binding. Front and rear covers in extremely good condition; spine cover split at base and missing a tiny section of title band.

See images for condition. About the book >.>.> At the time of his death Arthur Prior was intending to publish a collection of essays as a sequel to Papers on Time and Tense. P. T. Geach and A. J. P. Kenny have collected from among his published and unpublished works a score of papers which are worth preserving. Topics covered include existence and non- existence, possibility and necessity, self-reference and self-perception, the nature of inference and of intentionality, and the autonomy of ethics. All the essays display Prior's unique gift for the applica- tion of modern logical insights and techniques to traditional ethical and metaphysical problems. The collection includes five hitherto unpublished papers: 'On some Proofs of the Existence of God', 'It Was to Be', 'What is Logic?', 'What do General Statements Refer to ?', 'Things and Stuff'. A complete biblio- graphy of Prior's philosophical writings, compiled by Olav Flo, has been added as an appendix. (LL).
