Oblong 4to, (372x258mm), ff. [12] leaves of lithographed plates, two on India paper and laid down, and printed variously by Charles Hullmandel, Godefroy Engelmann, and Graf & Soret; plates are unnumbered; front endpaper creased, some occasional light foxing to plates, though first and eighth plate more prominently browned and foxed due to varying paper quality; stitched as issued, in contemporary buff printed boards lettered in black, marbled paper backed spine though most of spine now exposed, covers somewhat soiled, with wear to extremities and corners, and thus a little dog-eared; nevertheless sound and tight with the plates in good strong impressions. Rare unrecorded variant issue, containing twelve plates (as opposed to variant issues containing 6 and 10), of a striking souvenir album celebrating the charms of Malvern, on the cusp of the town becoming a popular centre for hydrotherapy. Henry Lamb (fl. 1826-1861) was an artist and lithographer, who opened his Fancy Repository Shop in Cheltenham in around 1824. Itself a burgeoning spa town, with good links to London, Lamb soon opened a second shop in the town, and in 1832 published a peepshow of the town, 'Cheltenhamorama', and then in 1833 'Views of Cheltenham and its Vicinity' (printed in Malvern), having previously published the present work in around 1830. His links with London brought him into contact with the noted lithographers Charles Joseph Hullmandel (1789-1850) and Godefroy Engelmann (1788-1839). At some point he opened his 'Royal Library and Bazaar' in Malvern itself, which sold fancy items, books, and stationery. It was visited by Darwin's young family during one of their early visits to the town. Lamb was to publish a number of souvenir print books of the town, especially once it had become a popular spa destination. A variant issue with six plates was issued with the lithographs printed on India paper and mounted, and which Abbey dates to ca. 1830. Yale hold a copy with 10 plates, which we presume is Abbey 266. Our copy does not contain the plate of the North Malvern Tanks, and includes three of the plates from Abbey 267. Whilst this could be called an extra illustrated copy of Abbey 266, what seems more likely is that perhaps Lamb was open to customers curating their own selection of plates which he then had stitched and bound. Two leading exponents, Dr James Wilson, and Dr James Manby Gully, both established clinics in the town during the early 1840s, several large hotels and guest houses in the town dating from this time, as it became a popular 'water cure' destination, attracting a stream of celebrated visitors including Queen Adelaide, Thomas Carlyle, Florence Nightingale, Tennyson, Wilberfore, and Charles Darwin, who visited on a number of occasions, both for his own health, as well as in an attempt to improve the health of his daughter Anne (or Annie). Sadly she succumbed to illness and died during a visit in 1851, and is buried in Great Malvern Priory churchyard. See Abbey 266 and 267 for variant issues of 10 and six plates.
