In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this record of service in Morocco, inscribed "To Mrs Wheeler, En souvenir of our meeting in Fez and of the Foreign Legion, Aage. Feb 1938". Hannah Neal Hobart Wheeler travelled through Tibet, was friends with Prince Aage's wife, and was one of the first women to drive across the Sahara. Wheeler was the widow of the Philadelphia "millionaire polo player" (Los Angeles Herald) and investment banker Charles Wheeler. She travelled across Tibet in the early 1930s, accumulating a world-class collection of antiquities, then settled on a 700-acre estate on the slopes of Mount Kenya. According to two typescript letters in this copy, Wheeler was introduced to Prince Aage in 1937. The letters, written by an unknown third party, claim she planned to drive to Morocco from Kenya, making her one of the earliest women to drive across the Sahara. Wheeler attended Prince Aage's 51st birthday party in Fez in 1938. She also became friends with his second wife, Dorothy Gould, granddaughter of the railway magnate and financier Jay Gould. In this copy is a loosely inserted manuscript Christmas card from Gould to Wheeler and a tipped-in signed photograph of Gould and Aage. Prince Aage of Denmark (1887-1940) joined the Danish army in 1909. In 1922 he transferred to the French Foreign Legion and was stationed in Morocco. He served during the Rif War (1921-26), was wounded, and awarded the Croix de Guerre. "S. F. Divorcee to Wed Rich Polo Player of Phila", Los Angeles Herald, vol. 42, no. 99, 24 February 1916. Octavo. With 16 half-tone photographic plates; 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements to rear, text in French. Original green paper wrappers, spine and wrappers lettered in black, publisher's reprice label to spine, half-tone photographic illustration to front wrapper, edges untrimmed. With relevant clippings loosely inserted and tipped in. Spine creased, chipped and repaired at head, front joint split at foot, small tide marks and ink stains on wrappers, contents lightly toned at edges: a very good copy.
