John Sherman (1823-1900) was an American politician who served in several key government positions, including Secretary of the Treasury (1877-1881) under President Rutherford B. Hayes and Secretary of State (1897-1898) under President William McKinley. As Secretary of the Treasury, Sherman was instrumental in the implementation of the Specie Payment Resumption Act of 1875, which aimed to restore the gold standard and stabilize the post-Civil War economy. During his tenure as Secretary of State, although brief, he dealt with significant foreign policy issues, including tensions with Spain that preceded the Spanish-American War. Sherman also had a long legislative career, serving as a U.S. Senator from Ohio and as a member of the House of Representatives, where he was a key advocate for economic and monetary reforms, including the Sherman Antitrust Act of 1890.

Complete with the rubbed, nicked and toned dustwrapper that has several short tears and small chips, mainly at the fold corners. Not price-clipped (16/- net to the lower front flap). A double presentation copy, first inscribed by the author (and artist) to his publisher (and editor) in blue ink at the head of the title page "To John Guest / from / Tristam Hillier / 13th January 1955", and 21 years after Hillier's presentation by John Guest in blue ink underneath "And / To Mary Renault / from / John Guest - in / memory of five extremely happy / days, 13th - 18th February, 1976 / There is a bibiographical footnote of mild interest: / for ages, we couldn't find a title for this / book - until I suggested the present one. Leda / is the name of Tristram's wife, and a long- / suffering woman she has been where he's / concerned. Presentation page indicates this copy was given to "Genl. L. Coombs [sic] in behalf of the Bunker Hill Monument Association." Inscription on the front pastedown endpaper: "To Farmer Dewees Esq / from his friend / Leslie Combs." Farmer Dewees (1792-1869) was a local banker in Lexington, Kentucky. Another ownership inscription for J.F. Graham on front flyleaf. (Sabin 9174). Leslie Combs (1793-1881) was a lawyer and politician from Kentucky. He served in the War of 1812, where he delivered dispatches to General William Henry Harrison. In later years, he would actively campaign for Harrison during the 1840 presidential election. After the war, Combs studied law and settled in Lexington, Kentucky. A member of the Whig Party, Combs served several nonconsecutive terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, being Speaker of the House in 1846. His last political office was as Clerk of the Kentucky Court of Appeals from 1860 to 1866.
