This work taking part among the Art Works Series of Turkish Naval Forces Cultural Publications, aims at introducing the Signaling Manual formerly used at the Ottoman Navy. The original copy in manuscript is in the Istanbul Naval Museum. Used by Turkish seamen for more than a century since the first quarter of the 19th century, this work has an exceptional value from the viewpoint of Turkish traditional handicrafts such as miniature, calligraphy, binding etc. When the circumstances of the epoch are taken into account, the high technique used in the preparation of the manual inevitably gives it an important position among similar works prepared for the war navies of other countries. This Code Book is one of the works created during the early times of scientific and cultural activities which took place within the Europeanization process of the Ottoman Empire. The fact that westernization practices in the Empire were first seen at the Navy is an indication of the importance attached by Turks to the seamanship.
