"First edition dedicated to Napoleon. A German edition appeared also in 1805. A Dutch edition appeared at the Hague in 1808 in thee volumes. A two volumes edition appeared at Vienna in 1807, and an Italian edition at Milan in four volumes with coloured plates in 1816. An English edition abridged, was printed in Sir Richard Phillips' "collection of Voyages" 1806, before the translation of Ann Plumptre which appeared in 4to with different illustrations from those in other editions. This work is the first and probably the best of Pouqueville's books on Greece. Pouqueville had joined the French expedition to Egypt as a medical man attached to the scientific commission. On his return to Italy in 1798 he was captured by privateers who landed him at Navarino. He was imprisoned at Tripoli for ten months and later was taken to Constantinople and confined to the prison of Seven Towers for two years. Although officially a prisoner of war he was able to move about during his stay in Tripoli; he studied modern Greeks, was able to make notes of his observations. He returned to France in 1801, produced his medical thesis on the plague, and wrote up this account of his experiences in the Levant. The book attracted a good deal of attention: Possibly the dedication to Napoleon helped. In 1805, as a result. Pouqueville was appointed French agent at Ionnina. The work contains a great deal of information on popular customs, superstitions, songs, etc. "Whether original or not, Pouqueville gives us the best picture of the Romaioi, as he calls them". Pouqueville, a medical doctor and member of the Scientific Commission was attached to Napoleon's expedition to Egypt. He was captured by pirates on his return journey and landed in Greece where he spent a year before he was taken to Constantinople and imprisoned for two years. Pouqueville (1770-1838) fut consul général de France auprès du pacha de Janina, puis à Patras.En philhellène convaincu, il s'attache surtout, dans cet ouvrage, à dépeindre l'état d'oppression dans lequel se trouvaient les Grecs sous le joug des Turcs et témoigne des crimes et abominations perpétrés par Ali Pacha.Ce faisant, il décrit la vie quotidienne, les us et coutumes et les traditions des habitants du Péloponnèse, ainsi que leur condition économique et sociale. François Pouqueville (1770-1838) was a French diplomat, explorer, physician and historian, and member of the Institut de France. As the Turkish sultan's hostage and then as Napoleon Bonaparte's general consul at the court of Ali Pasha of Ioannina, Pouqueville travelled extensively throughout Ottoman occupied Greece from 1798 to 1820. Through his diplomacy and writings, Pouqueville became a prominent spokesman for the Philhellenism movement throughout Europe and contributed to the liberation of the Greeks and the rebirth of the Greek nation. The present work, dedicated Emperor Napoleon I, was Pouqueville's first major publication and was a huge literary success. It established Pouqueville as an expert in Ottoman affairs and contributed to his nomination as Napoleon's consul general to the court of Ali Pasha of Ioannina. Voyage en Morée was republished in various forms over the next few years; an English translation and abridgement appeared in 1806, and a full translation by Anne Plumptre was published in 1813.
