Pages numbered 47/48 are not present as they are replaced with a folding plate as Brutish Library copy. some age browning to contents armorial bookplate of James Frampton to the front paste down, faint contemporary signature to the title page. The content clean and tight. Re cased with the original brown calf boards showing some old surface rubbing with later matching leather spine , the binding tight with no splits.

Scarce. States: Fourth edition, revised and improved with many necessary additions to the present year. Full leather hardback. Raised bands to spine. Parallel text in English and French. Front board a little loose at base but still holding firm. Leather shows signs of handling. Internally, the pages are age toned, but clean. One gather feels a little loose at the base - presumably due to front board being slightly loose. Overall a good and rare item. vii, table, 227, [1] pages. 175 x 115 mm (7 x 4½ inches). Pote was an Eton school housemaster and bookseller. "Jos[eph] Pote of Eton, a man of great renown, / Buys a book for sixpence, and sells it for a crown" (from ODNB). .

Quarto, pp [6], i-iii, [11], 431. 13 plates including frontispiece engraving of The Prince Companion, of which 3 are gatefold, including Plan of the Castle; 3 illustrations in text of which 1 full page; armorial headpiece to Chapter One. Dedication leaf printed in red. Full contemporary calf with five raised bands, gilt titles and decoration to compartments, gilt to board edges and all edges sprinkled red. Binding a little scuffed and rubbed with wear at corners; lower corners bumped. Scattered foxing mainly to plates, prelims and endpapers; armorial bookplate of William Arthur, Sixth Duke of Portland, to front pastedown. Upper inner hinge split but holding well but ffep attached at either end. Upper and lower joints rubbed, otherwise a solid copy in a contemporary binding. Comprehensive history of the Castle and its environs, the Order of the Garter and its ceremonies and Knights, the contents and furnishings of the Castle, St George's Chapel and its monuments and Deans & Prebends, and of the neighbouring town. Scarce.

Cover with some rubbing and marks, corners bumped, a couple of chips to corners and bottom edge and end of spine. Small chip/worm-hole to bottom corner of front endpaper and also to rear endpaper and last couple of pages. Previous owners inscription to rear endpaper ?John Stevens, His Book, June 17. 1759.? Some occasional handling marks and minor light foxing spots, small faint water stain to page edges, and top inner corner of rear endpapers. Minor dark spot to corner of p1&2, some minor soiling to margins of p51-56. Else a very good rare 1st edition. ix + 215pp. + 1pp advert at rear. Previous owner's name (Peter Otto Rosenørn - owner of Hersomgård) in contemporary hand to front free end-paper. Title-page closely trimmed in lower margin with loss of last line of imprint. Worm-tract in lower outer corner. With occassional underlinings and marginal annotations throughout in contemporary hand. (22), 215, (1) pp. Second edition, first published in 1729.
