Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - A fresh reading of medieval thinker Ibn Taymiyya, offering pathbreaking insight into his lasting relevance in debates on Islam, authority, and religious thought.Ibn Taymiyya's Thought: Corpus, Reception, and Legacy explores the work, influence, and lasting impact of one of the most controversial and prolific figures in Islamic intellectual history: Taq¿ l-D¿n A¿mad Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328). Adopting a clear and rigorous approach, this book traces the key strands of Ibn Taymiyya's thought and shows how his writings have been interpreted, transformed, challenged, and reappropriated over time. It sheds light on the tensions between tradition and renewal, and between religious authority and critical inquiry. Beyond Taymiyyan thought itself, the book offers a deeper understanding of contemporary debates about Islam by situating them within a long and complex intellectual history. Thus, it will appeal both to readers eager to grasp the complex thought of one of medieval Islam's most controversial scholars and to those interested in the ongoing relevance of his ideas in modern intellectual and religious debates across the Muslim world. This volume makes a vital contribution to the study of Ibn Taymiyya by engaging closely with his texts, and considering them in their original historical context as well as in the diverse settings in which they have been reread and reappropriated, whether directly or indirectly.…

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In 1962 Norbert Elias was invited as a temporary professor at the University of Ghana in Legon, Accra. He taught, employed fieldwork, travelled, and met many people in postcolonial Africa. When Elias left Ghana in 1964,he had laid the basic groundwork for a fundamental sociological argument on human societies. The volume on hand is a selection of his unpublished writings based on these experiences. Together they touch upon not only the well-known criticism of Eurocentrism and a developmental perspective but also what could be considered the core of Elias's work: the concept of civilisation. In a foreword, Dieter Reicher and Adrian Jitschin have endeavoured to explain and break down the relations of Elias's African experience to the rest of his work and biography. They also clarified some misleading interpretations of Elias's time in Africa. Finally, Arjan Post has uncovered the previously unknown fascinating story of Elias'encounter with Malcolm X in an epilogue.…

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - The Journeys of a Taymiyyan Sufi explores the life and teachings of ?Imad al-Din A?mad al-Wasi?i (d. 711/1311), a little-known ?anbali Sufi master from the circle of Ibn Taymiyya (d. 728/1328). The first part of this book follows al-Wasi?i's physical journey in search of spiritual guidance through a critical study of his autobiographical writings. This provides unique insights into the Rifa?iyya, the Shadhiliyya, and the school of Ibn ?Arabi, several manifestations of Sufism that he encountered as he travelled from Wasi? to Baghdad, Alexandria, and Cairo. Part I closes with his final destination, Damascus, where his membership of Ibn Taymiyya's circle and his role as a Sufi teacher is closely examined. The second part focuses on al-Wasi?i's spiritual journey through a study of his Sufi writings, which convey the distinct type of traditionalist Sufism that he taught in early eighth/fourteenth-century Damascus. Besides providing an overview of the spiritual path unto God from beginning to end as he formulated it, this reveals an exceptional interplay between Sufi theory and traditionalist theology.…

Hardback, Pages: 466, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 9 col., Languages: English, Greek, Arabic. ISBN 9782503620008. Summary Networking through Biography. Constructing Intellectual Junctions in Antiquity, the Renaissance and the Arabo-Islamic World collects thirteen contributions exploring various ways in which biography was used to create and modify intellectual networks in Greco-Roman antiquity, the Italian Renaissance and the Arabic Middle Period. The volume examines not only biographies in the proper sense of the term, but also other forms of biographical discourse, such as encyclopedias, historical works and autobiographies. The essays deal with biographies of a wide range of persons, including poets, politicians, semi-mythical lawgivers, philosophers, rhetoricians, Christian theologians, and Islamic scholars. By detecting parallel developments and different or similar networking strategies, the diachronic approach taken in the present volume reveals specific characteristics of networking through biography in different intellectual and literary traditions, showing that creating intellectual networks was an important, sometimes even the central, function of biographical writing.
