Hume was notorious during his lifetime and thereafter for his criticisms of various claims to religious knowledge and for his naturalistic explanations of the origins of religious belief. Raised as a Scottish Calvinist, Hume attended Edinburgh University for two years, when he was thirteen and fourteen. There he began to read the new philosophy of John Locke, and there he met some of the modem and moderate Calvinist thinkers. By the time he was twenty he had abandoned his traditional Calvinist religious beliefs and had developed the outlines of his general philosophical outlook. Shortly thereafter he used a part of his inheritance to go to France to write his first philosophical work, A Treatise of Human Nature, published in 1739-40. As Hume said, the work "fell dead- bom from the press. . . By and large, the Treatise was ignored at the time; it has become recognized as a masterpiece only during the present century. From Hume's letters we learn that the original first part of the Treatise was a critical examination of the evidence for religious miracles. So as not to incur the displeasure of Bishop Joseph Butler, a leading Anglican divine, he removed this section before the book was published. Hume said that he castrated the book of its nobler parts. Nonetheless, his skeptical attitude toward theological and religious knowledge gained him the animosity of the conservative Protestant clergy, especially in Scotland; his application for a teaching post at Edinburgh University was blocked by the opposition of these clergymen, who accused him of all sorts of heresies. In 1748 Hume published An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding. This in large measure is a more popular version of the first book of his unsuccessful Treatise. However, it includes both the essay "Of Miracles" that had been excluded earlier, and another essay, "Of a Particular Providence and of a Future State." These essays sought to show that insufficient evidence existed to support any belief in miracles or in providence and a future state, and that a reasonable person would reject all popular superstitions bearing on these matters.
