Zustand: Bueno. : JOHN WILLIAM POLIDORI, . FIRST EDITION, fourth issue, complete with half-title and both Extracts, a little very light spotting, pp. xxv, [i], [27-] 84, 8vo, contemporary half calf, terracotta lettering piece (later, but blending in perfectly), slightly worn at extremities, and repair to head of spine, good. Fourth issue: without Byron's name on the title-page, gathering 'A' reset to 23 lines to account for the removal of a slur on Mary Godwin and Claire Clairmont, and 'almost' corrected on p. 36. An agreeable copy in a contemporary binding. Pasted inside the front cover is an old bookseller's description, not identifying the issue, but asserting 'it is difficult to know who wrote this work' (though Polidori's name is given within square brackets).

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First edition. 8vo. xxv,(1),27-84pp. Sherwood, Neely, and Jones' Third Issue. Half-title is present. The 'Extract', pp. 73-84, is present. Both Extracts are sometimes attributed to John Mitford. Nicely bound to style in quarter calf, spine gilt; leather lettering label, gilt; marbled paper boards, vellum tips. A fine copy. This title has a curious bibliographic history, with first issues attributing authorship to Lord Byron, then removing Byron's name, then this issue (Viets IV), with gathering 'A' reset to 23 lines to account for the removal of a slur on Mary Godwin and Jane Clermont and with 'lmost' on page 36. Earlier issues are nearly unavailable, making this essentially the earliest printing obtainable of the first book on vampires. See Viets in PBSA LXIII (1969), 83-103.

Erstausgabe
FIRST EDITION, second issue. (i)-(xxvi), 27-84. Half title. Uncut in orig. drab paper wrappers, title on front wrapper in contemp. hand; very faint mark to front wrapper, spine expertly repaired. A beautiful copy in wrappers. This is Henry Viets' III, second issue of the first edition, with gathering 'A', which contains the 'Extract of a Letter from Geneva', maintaining the apparent slight concerning Mary Godwin and Claire Clermont. 'Almost' has been corrected in the final line of p.36. The tale was first brought to public attention in Henry Colburn's New Monthly Magazine, in April 1819, erroneously attributing the tale to Lord Byron. Byron certainly had a hand in the work's creation, encouraging Polidori to write the piece when the young surgeon accompanied him on his continental tour of 1816, but it seems Colburn deliberately misled the public with its misattribution, clearly hoping to exploit the poet's fame. The first printing in book-form also had Byron's name on the titlepage, but in later issues it was removed, and eventually Polidori's name was added. See Chew p.176: 'The Vampyre. was quickly repudiated by Byron, and Dr. Polidori acknowledged its authorship'. John William Polidori, 1795-1821, was a physician and writer best known for this work, which was the result of the infamous ghost story competition posed by Byron and P.B. Shelley at Villa Diodati on the shores of Lake Geneva in the wet and dreary 'year without a summer', 1816. The most significant work to come out of the challenge is of course Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1818), but The Vampyre, the first modern vampire story in English, played an important role in the development of the romantic vampire genre and of fantasy fiction more generally. His only other known literary work is the Milton and Byron inspired epic poem 'The Fall of the Angels', which was published anonymously in the spring of 1821. Polidori died at his father's London house on August 24th of the same year at just 25 years old; though the coroner listed the death as by natural causes, there is evidence to suggest that he died by suicide by ingesting prussic acid, or cyanide. Through his younger sister Frances, Polidori was posthumously the uncle of Dante Gabriel, William Michael, and Christina Rossetti.
