The urban environment is an uninterrupted cacophony of billboards, signs and bright lights, while the electronic screen or the printed page spew forth a staccato volley of rapid-fire images. At a certain point we become accustomed to the density and pace, and intuitively adjust to it, though in time we grow restless and demand a quicker fix. Although stimulating to the eyes and brain, this image glut works much like a drug; the overstimulation impairs our thought processes, and prolonged exposure leaves us dulled and apathetic. This image overload prevents us from focusing on any one image or idea for very long. In attempting to take everything in, we find it necessary to "speed-read" what we see, jumping from one image to the next with only a cursory glance at each, our eyes anxious to catch the next visual trajectory. Compulsively straining to keep up-to-date, we spend an inordinate amount of time ingesting information, but little time synthesizing what we see. This collision of images expresses the moment; our world is fractured, violent and conflicted. As our society becomes more paranoid and embattled, more isolated and unsure of what the future holds, we seek comfort in the instant recognizability of images from the past to medicate us against our contemporary predicament. Around the turn of the century, visual artists began to exploit the instant appeal and broad familiarity of mass-mediated imagery. Suspicious of the simplistic presentation and emphatic finality of a single point-of-view, many artists instead began exploring a more complex approach, incorporating a variety of artistic media into their artwork. This practice began with the Cubist's working of bits of newspaper into their collages; by the 1960s Pop artists were incorporating consumer products, advertisements and other cultural emblems into their work. Recycled imagery necessitates a link with history and collective experience; by using familiar, mass-media imagery, these artists' focus became more societal and less personal.
