I was born in 1942 near the infamous beaches of Normandy. At the time, my great aunt on my father's side, Charlotte Aline Virmoux, called Aline, was 47 years old. She and her husband Louis were active members in a French Resistance network. During my younger years I met her on several occasions and heard about her experiences in the Ravensbrück concentration camp in Germany, north of Berlin. But it was not until spring 1962, when I was a student in Paris, the Gay-Lussac Institute, that I started to fully appreciate her story, and who she really was. She lived in a small town, Quincy-sous-Senart, south of Paris where I often visited her: she loved talking to me, and she emptied her heart of so many infamous memories. At age 20 I had already heard many war stories from my family, cousins, and friends but the intensity of these stories never reached anywhere close to Aline's memories. I hope I can do justice to deliver this message where horror becomes daily routine for those who became nothing, brought to a status lower than animals, where dignity became an unthinkable luxury. Yet, following her escape from the concentration camp that was under Russian artillery fire, she managed to save the life of a wounded American soldier, showing amazing bravery.

Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book is based on a true story and accurate historical details. None of the characters are fictional. The story of Joan of Arc unfairly sunk in the mist of history and I want to correct for this anomaly. What if Joan of Arc had never existed. France would have never been more than a British colony in a vast Empire. The French Revolution would have lost its most powerful symbol in the person of Marianne. The founders of the American Constitution would have never been inspired by the French Philosophers. The decisive support from France that led to the American freedom would have never taken place. As a consequence, our famous American Constitution would have never been written. Lady Liberty would have never existed. All this should be food for thought. We owe much more than ever imaginable, to this young, formidable woman, who was Joan of Arc, as she surely changed the course of humanity during one year of her life, at age seventeen.
Zustand: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 482 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Sometimes you pick up a book thinking it will just be an average reading experience; one that gives you something to do on a normal day where you have a few hours to sit and relax. Heirs of a Lost Race is not such a book. It is much more and demands that the reader pay attention to the greater message. Pitard requires the reader to think about the characters, what is happening and why, and contrasts that information with the his/her world. It takes several chapters before the pieces begin to fit into the story and is worth the wait. The characters offer a prismatic view of human nature from love and misplaced hate to the search for a higher, moral purpose in living. Like other classic tales, the message reminds us that people are only complete when they give fully to a cause beyond their own gain. By doing so, however, the journey is neither easy nor painless. To give fully most often requires that, as individuals, we may be asked to consign our personal needs and wants to attain the mission. Ancient Incan and Polynesian legends come alive under Pitard's skilled and riveting re-creation of ancient mariners and their epic journeys. Pitard's sensory conjuring creates experiences so vivid, so alive that you will see, hear, and smell the lush, primeval forests thick with exotic flora, fauna. and impenetrable mystery. Thrill at being Kon Tici Viracocha's companion as he challenges the terrible, unknown reaches of the Pacific Ocean, swim among breathtaking reefs, and explore atolls rife with unseen dangers.
