Nicht ohne Grund hat die literarische Epoche den Beinamen 'Geniezeit' bekommen: Das Genie ist des Sturm und Drangs liebstes Thema. Der Begriff des Genies war in dieser Zeit keineswegs neu, doch hatte sich die in der Sturm und Drang gängige Bedeutung erst seit dem 16. Jahrhundert langsam herauskristallisiert. Um 1770 kommt es zu einem Umschwung im Genie-Gedanken, der für die Nachwelt von großer Bedeutung sein sollte. Die junge revolutionäre Generation der Stürmer und Dränger kämpft hier gegen alte Autoritäten der Antike, die von den Aufklärern übernommen wurden. In der Genie-Ästhetik setzt man sich für die Autonomie und regellose Entfaltungsfreiheit des Künstlers, aber auch des menschlichen Ichs im allgemeinen ein. Das Genie ist dabei der Künstler, der mit überragender Geisteskraft, welche sich vollkommen und subjektiv, ohne Orientierung an traditionellen Normen oder Regeln, in seinem Kunstwerk verwirklicht. Im 18. Jahrhundert erreicht der Genie-Begriff seinen Höhepunkt, der auf der einen Seite von einem gesteigerten Gefühlsleben, vertreten durch die Stürmer und Dränger, auf der anderen Seite von dem gesteigerten Vernunftsgedanken der Aufklärer und Rationalisten, geprägt ist.In dieser Arbeit wird anfänglich in dem theoretischen Teil auf den Genie-Begriff der Aufklärung eingegangen, um so besser verdeutlichen zu können, was sich im Sturm und Drang daraufhin veränderte. Ausgehend von den theoretischen Grundlagentexten Herders, Goethes und zum Teil Youngs werden im Hauptteil die Fragen 'was ist Genie im Sturm und Drang' 'Was ist Genie ' 'Was ist es nicht ' 'Wie soll man ein Kunstwerk eines Genies verstehen ' analysiert . Diese Fragen sind nötig, um verstehen zu können, warum das Genie im Sturm und Drang eine solche Sonderstellung einnahm und warum es für die Nachwelt von großer Bedeutung sein sollte.Allerdings sollte auch die praktische Seite der Genie-Ästhetik nicht vergessen werden. Im dritten Teil der Aufgabe wird die Hymne 'Prometheus' von Goethe einer Analyse unterzogen, um so deutlich zu machen, wie sich diese Ästhetik in der Dichtkunst verwirklicht hat. Die Grundlage für diese Analyse bilden die aus dem theoretischen Teil herausgearbeiteten Charakteristiken eines Genies.
