On y apprend par exemple à demander "Quelle est la nature de la rade ?" ou à répondre qu'un général est "très brave ; il ne recule devant rien". Claude-Philibert Dabry de Thiersant (1826-1898) fut d'abord officier de marine avant de se lancer dans une carrière diplomatique qui lui permit de remplir plusieurs postes consulaires en Extrême-Orient.
