The Tattvacintamani or Jewel of reflection on the Truth (about epistemology) is the sole composition left us by the great fourteenth century Indian logician Gangesa Upadhyaya. With this foundational text Gangesa solidified the New (navya) phase of the long running school of epistemology and metaphysics known in India as nyaya. The present work is a translation of the perception chapter (Pratyaksa khanda) of this important text. The authors have provided an introduction covering essential theoretical and historical background and a comparison of Nyaya with western epistemological traditions. The translation is augmented with a detailed running commentary which presents further background contextualization analysis and comparison. Includes a glossary explaining in English every Sanskrit word used brief characterizations of persons and schools and a detailed index. 724 pp.

In con trast to the many scientific meetings organised by the ClBA FOUN DATION either at its headquarters in London or occasionally abroad, the subjects dealt with at these International Symposia have con cerned problems more directly related to ClBA'S own research work in the pharmaceutical field. The various topics covered up to the present reflect the far-reaching interests and the wide spread activities that a pharmaceutical enterprise develops in quite diverse fields of chemical, biological, and medical research, and to which the ba.sic approach is an increasingly important prerequisite for the development of a new and useful therapeutic agent. Iron metabolism came into the sphere of interest in connection with CIBA'S research on antibiotics and related natural products containing iron, substances which act in their metal-free form as strong and specific chelating agents. Of course, these observations, interesting though they are, would not in themselves have justi fied a symposium. It seemed, however, useful to examine the new results from a wider perspective and to attempt to relate them to present-day knowledge of iron metabolism in general its physiology, its pathology, and therapeutic aspects. The success of a scientific symposium depends on the concep tion of the programme and the selection of the participants.

Hand-coloured Copper engraved plan, mounted (matted) and ready to frame in the UK, but for overseas customers it would probably be unmounted as it would be too large to post. Colouring not contemporary, but delicately and expertly done. No date, but printed c 1750. Plan of the town showing the Star fort of St Philip's with its star-shaped fortifications, with the explanation inset. There is slight loss to the plan, a section of perhaps one inch missing from the left-hand side, with no appreciable loss to the depiction of the town and harbour. This accounts for the low price of the plan. Printed for Mr Tindal's continuation of Mr Rapin's History of England.
