Hormis le dos un peu frotté et qq. rousseurs, l'exemplaire est par ailleurs agréable et les gravures plus fraîches qu'à l'ordinaire (ex-libris gravés, l'un héraldique à trois merlettes de Joannis Francisci Rondé, l'autre de L. Muito bom estado.

Text in Latin. Title in ink to the spine. pp. 8 including engraved frontispiece + 202 + 4 index. Engraved printer's ornament to the title page. Engraved frontispiece illustration is of a man from the Orient holding a cup of coffee, a man from China holding a cup of tea, and a native of Mexico holding a cup of chocolate. Bound without the engraved frontispieces to each of the two later parts with no evidence of their ever being present. Jacob Spon's translation of 'Traités nouveaux et curieux du caffé, du thé et du chocolate', published in Lyon in 1685, which is an enlarged edition of 'De l'vsage du caphé, du thé et du chocolate' dating from 1671. Binding with minor age-marking but nice and tight. Minor worm holes to the final few pages, rear paste-down and rear hinge. A very good indeed, tight, clean copy. Very scarce.

Sans le titre-frontispice. Bien complet en revanche des trois planches gravées sur cuivre représentant des personnages en costumes : l'Arabe avec son ibrik pour préparer le café, le Chinois avec son pot de thé et l'Américain avec sa chocolatière et son gobelet. Les trois buveurs sont représentés ensemble sur le bandeau gravé par Ogier, répété en tête des trois traités (du café, du thé, du chocolat). L'auteur aborde ici les origines de chacune des substances, leurs usages ainsi que les préparations et traite des effets comme de comme des utilisations thérapeutiques. L'ouvrage fait sans doute suite à un autre, De l'usage du caphé, du thé et du chocolate que Girin et Rivière avaient publié sous l'anonymat en 1671. Philippe Sylvestre Dufour (1622-1687), riche apothicaire lyonnais, faisait commerce des produits d'Orient. Il possédait un cabinet de curiosités que son coreligionnaire et ami Jacob Spon décrit, en 1673, comme contenant des "Raretés du Levant, pièces de Tour, Médailles antiques d'or & d'argent" (Recherche des antiquités et curiosités de la ville de Lyon. Lyon, de l'imprimerie de Jaques Faeton, 1673. p. 205). Reliure aux armes de Charles-Louis de Montchal (mort en 1686) avocat à la cour des aides en 1645 et de Paris en 1680 : de gueules au chef d'or, chargé de trois molettes d'éperon d'azur, avec la devise "Je lay gaignée". Reliure usagée. Réparation ancienne à l'une des planches, petits trous de vers angulaire sur les premiers feuillets, sans toucher le texte, quelques salissures. Oberlé Fastes, n° 733. Sheep calf in contemporary style with back label, spine slightly gilded, (slightly worn and spotted). Second edition of the revised new edition, published at first anonymously in 1671. Early work on the history of coffee, tea and chocolate. Vicaire 293; Cordier, Bibl. Sinica 1, 491. The author, born in the South of France, was dealer of herbs and spices in Marseille. For his work he used different texts by famous oriental travellers as sources. The 3 very nice plates are showing coffee-, tea- and chocolate-plants as well as a person using typical objects of use. At the beginning and at the end a bit waterstained to the gutter, some spottings, with an attached and mounted receipt for chocolate.

Sprache 1671 anonym erschienen <De l'usage du Café. . Das Buch erschien auch in Latein sowie weiteren europäischen Sprachen. Der Autor wurde in Manosque (Südfrankreich) 1622 geboren. Er betätigte sich in Marseille als Gewürzhändler, wo er das Geschäft von seinem Onkel übernommen hatte. Als Calvinist (Protestant) musste er nach der Aufhebung des Edites von Nantes ins Exil in die Schweiz flüchten wo er auch 1687 (Vevey) starb. Das Buch wurde früher oft Jacob Spon zugeschrieben. dieser war aber der Übersetzer für die lateinische Ausgabe. Auch Spon war Calvinist, und Freund von Dufour, und floh ebenfalls in die Schweiz wo er seine Bücher in Genf herausgab. Das Buch ist mit 4 Kupfern illustriert. Das Titelkupfer zeigt den Moslem, Chinesen und Indios ihre Getränke trinkend, die 3 andern Kupfer zeigen jeweils diese Herren mit Abbildungen der jeweiligen Pflanzen. Papierbedingt etw. gebräunt, schwache Stempelspur verso Frontispiz. Sprache: deutsch;.
