Aus einem kleinen Dorf wurde innerhalb kurzer Zeit ein Ballungsgebiet mit etlichen tausend Einwohnern. Vielfach wurde die Region auch als zweitgrößte Siedlung Ö…sterreichs nach Wien bezeichnet. Möglich wurde dies durch die Entdeckung reicher Silbererzadern in den Bergen rund um den Ort. Das Leben mit dem Silber beschreibt die wirtschaftliche und soziale Entwicklung der Region vom Beginn der Bergbauaktivitäten in der Mitte des 15. Jahrhunderts bis zum langsamen Niedergang des Erzabbaus rund 200 Jahre später. Das Buch spannt den Bogen von der Schilderung der Hauptakteure in der Region über die Darstellung der wirtschaftlichen Aktivitäten bis hin zur Beschreibung der Siedlungsentwicklung. Es bietet im Wesentlichen einen Einblick in den Alltag der Silberregion und weicht somit von gängigen Deutungsmustern ab, in denen hauptsächlich Platz war für die «großen» Akteure in der Region, wie Gewerke und Schmelzherren. 178 pp. Deutsch.
