A charming reprinted copy of John Philipott and William Ryley's 1634 examination of heraldry in Oxfordshire; rebound in a half cloth binding with attractive marbled paper boards, with the original paper wraps preserved. This work was reprinted from the monumental "Miscellanea Genealogica et Hera…ldica" series. This copy features a tipped in bookplate of a 'Georgii Drewry Squibb' to the verso of the original front wrap. George Drewry Squibb was a renowned English lawyer, herald and antiquary who was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, the Society of Genealogists, and the Royal Historical Society. Squibb was interested in genealogy and heraldry from his youth, and throughout his life combined his professional practice with scholarly research and publication on historical topics linked to his interests. He wrote numerous definitive studies on heraldry (including the monumental 'The Law of Arms in England') and earned a reputation as a pioneering authority on the subject. With an additional bookplate of A 'John Holden' tipped to rear original wrap. With numerous in-text illustrations throughout. Rebound in a half cloth binding with marbled paper boards; original paper wraps preserved. Externally excellent, with minor shelfwear to extremities. Slight handling marks to boards. Previous owner's bookplate tipped to verso of front original wrap, and another to rear original wrap. Internally generally firmly bound. Title page detached but present. Pages slightly age toned but very bright and clean throughout. Slight chipping to the extremities of the occasional page. Professional repair to pages 1/2, 11/12 and 23/24, not affecting text. Separate chapter on 'The Defcription of the Islands' including Elmeley [near Faversham], Graine, Hartie, Oxney, Shepey [Including 'Conftables of Quinborough Caftle'], Thanet [Including paragraphs on Sarre, Downebarton, Quekes, Weft-gate, Dandelion, Nafh-court, Dene, Hengrove, Salmefton, Dane-court, Ellington, Manfton, St. Lawrence, Minfter, and Monkton], and Stonar.
