Contemporary half black roan, gilt lettered on the backstrip, marbled paper sides, armorial bookplate of Henry Lloyd Gibbs. (Ulrich & Kup, Books and printing a select list of periodicals p24.) A rare and not insignificant American bibliophilic journal, printed on India paper by C. A. Alvord for the publisher and published initially from their office at 51 Nassau Street, and later from number 64 and described by Ulrich & Kup as containing 'much of historical interest on collectors and collections.' Copac locates no copies in British academic libraries.

The catalogue itself is notable for two reasons. First, there are the precise, knowledgeable, and extensive descriptions, with numerous references to specialized bibliographies: most American book catalogues of this period give the barest information about the items at hand. Second, this is certainly the most lavishly-produced American book auction catalogue of the 19th century. It was beautifully printed on fine laid paper, with numerous engraved initials, headpieces, and tailpieces.
