Summary:"Even before its doors opened to the public in 1916 the Cleveland Museum of Art had begun to collect the art of Africa, and in 2003 reaffirms its commitment with an innovative reinstallation of a gallery of sub-Saharan African art. Enriched with many field photographs and much ethnographical information, this presentation also emphasizes the extraordinary formal invention and spiritual power of the objects. This volume celebrates the new energy and clarity brought to the collection with discussions of forty-two important works, newly photographed and generously illustrated, a concise introduction, and a list of references that range widely through the literature of the field."--Jacket.

(Verlagstext) // INHALT : Foreword ----- Acknowledgments ----- Faces and Figures of Sub-Saharan Africa ----- Map of Africa ----- Plates ----- Documentation ----- References ----- Photography Credits. // . The Cleveland Museum of Art acquired its first African objects in 1915, a year before its doors opened to the public, and organized its first African art exhibition as early as 1929. A department of primitive art, which included the arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas, was created in 1929 and existed until 1940. The museum was also one of the few venues to host a traveling version of the landmark exhibition African Negro Art, conceived by curator James Johnson Sweeney for the Museum of Modern Art in 1935 (fig. 1).The importance of this exhibition has been summarized by Suzanne Preston Blier, professor of African art history at Harvard University: "If today the vast majority of art historians and fine arts trained curators specializing in African art are American, it is in part because African art officially became 'art' to the wider museum-going public in the United States in 1935 on the occasion of the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition of African art." In 1915, a series of Kuba textiles and a group of Chokwe pieces entered the collection. These first African objects were acquired with funds allocated for education. Although this collection grouped different examples of the decorative or applied arts (in the strict Western sense of the term) and included no figure sculptures or masks, the artistic qualities of some of the Chokwe objects in particular are recognized today and similar pieces have been part of more than one exhibition of masterpieces (fig. 2 and pl. 34). The year 1929 saw a next important step in the building of the collection, when the Gilpin Players and the African Art Sponsors, two predominantly African American groups associated with Cleveland's interracial settlement house Karamu, donated a large collection of objects. Some of these gifts, most notably a number of works from the Mangbetu peoples of northeastern Congo, had apparently been acquired in Africa by the Cleveland artist Paul Travis in the late 1920s (fig. 3).
