Small repair with associated tear to p 31/2 of Late Apology, corner loss to p 27/8 of Letter. Scattered foxing and finger-marking; some toning mainly to Papal Tyranny and to individual title pages otherwise contents very good. Anti-Catholicism in England was inextricably linked with fears of internal subversion and terrorism, and of invasion by Catholic powers France and Spain. The reigns of the Protestant monarchs were marked by Catholic plots and assassination attempts; Catholics were even blamed for the Great Fire of London in 1666. Attitudes remained entrenched and in 1698 the Popery Act imposed Penal Laws which remained largely in place for over a hundred years; even in 1780 discussions about the repeal of some of the laws provoked the Gordon Riots. This collection of pamphlets gives an indication of the attitudes of the time and of the seriousness with which the subject was treated.
