In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. John Astrop (Dustwrapper design) (illustrator). First UK Edition. The second volume of Simone de Beauvoir's autobiography, following on from "Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter". First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1962 as stated on the printer's page. The first English translation was published in the USA by the World Publishing Company, Cleveland and New York. The book was originally published in Paris, France as 'La Force de l'Age', by Librairie Gallimard in 1960. Translated from the French by Peter Green. Dedicated to Jean-Paul Sartre. Dustwrapper designed by John Astrop. ***Very good in blue cloth-covered boards, with silver titles to the spine. The silver is still nice and bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards show some marks and rubbing commensurate with age and handling, but are undamaged. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding, but there is a light vertical crease to the spine. Spine tight. Page block edges slightly foxed, mainly to the top edge. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Some foxing spots to the first and last couple of pages, but no internal foxing - pages clean. No creases or tears to the paper. ***In a good only colour illustrated dustwrapper, which has been corner price-clipped. Whilst the dustwrapper is essentially complete, there is a triangular chip to the lower edge of the back panel, which has been disguised with replacement paper by a previous owner (please see scans). The edges are creased and rubbed, with a few small edge nicks and closed tears, and some associated creasing. Having said that, the dustwrapper is still quite presentable, being clean and unbrowned. The spine of dustwrapper remains unfaded. Dustwrapper bright. ***222mm x 150mm. 479 pages. ***'The second volume of one of the great autobiographies of our age begins in freedom and delight. Simone de Beauvoir has escaped, as she described in "Memoirs of a Dutiful Daughter," from a family atmosphere which she found stifling. She has fought her way out by intelligence, energy and the ruthless but touching egoism of an extraordinary gifted girl sure of her powers. She has joined forces with Jean-Paul Sartre, not in marriage, for which they see no reason, but in an enduring and supremely satisfying partnership of the mind, the imagination and the senses. There has never been a franker, more exact or more impressive account of a love than this portrait of the most notable literary couple in France.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper). ***A first impression of the true first UK edition - fairly uncommon to find now in the original dustwrapper. Of interest to collectors of the work and life of Simone de Beauvoir, and of classic twentieth century French literature. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
