Nach Kriegsausbruch trat er in die britische Armee ein und kehrte nach 1945 als Besatzungsoffizier in das kriegszerstörte Berlin zurück, die Stadt, in der er seine Jugend verbracht hatte. Dort übernahm er zentrale Aufgaben der britischen Militärverwaltung und lernte schließlich die junge Jüdin Ellen Weiß kennen, die die Jahre der nationalsozialistischen Verfolgung gemeinsam mit ihrer Mutter in der Illegalität verbracht hatte, während fast ihre gesamte Familie in den Konzentrationslagern ermordet wurde.
