A presentation copy, inscribed to Joanna Drew, with a drawing, in different coloured inks, on the tittle page 'Joanna with my love Roland'. The 'J' of Joanna extends across the page in blue and orange inks, with decorative flourish, underlined thickly in red. Joanna Drew had an extraordinary career in the art world, being responsible for many years for the Arts Council's touring exhibitions, and was Director of the Hayward Gallery, Among the many exhibitions she organised was the legendary Picasso show, curated by Roland Penrose, at the Tate Gallery in 1960. Back cover scuffed at lower edge, top cover a touch dusty.

A few small soil spots on front and rear covers, else a near fine bright copy, with publisher's cancel label, listing price adjustments to three of their publications, affixed to rear cover. Penrose, artist and poet, was associated with the surrealists in the United Kingdom. Inscribed by Penrose on the title page, with a large, bold crayon abstract design by Penrose: "for June et Jacque, his affectueusement. Roland: 28 June [crossed out and replaced with "Oct"], 1975." The drawing consists of a large Omega sign in light blue crayon and a larger abstract design, encircling the printed title, in a thick line which then spirals and descends to the bottom of the title page in bright red crayon. The drawing measures approximately 5" x 8". Issued as the "Charlton Lectures on Art, delivered in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne".

Januar 1972 hängt eine handschriftliche Liste der Fotografien an, die Sir Roland Penrose zurück gesandt werden sollen. Darunter sind Abbildungen von Werken von Man Ray, Tanguy, Jennings, aber auch von Penrose selbst.Die Ausstellung Der Surrealismus 1922 - 1942" fand vom 11. März bis 7. Mai 1972 in München statt und vom 26. Mai bis 23. Juli 1972 im Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris.Penrose war ein renommierter Galerist, Kunstsammler und Kurator sowie Mitbegründer der surrealistischen Bewegung in Großbritannien und Gründungsmitglied des Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London. 1923 zog er nach Frankreich und bewegte sich surrealistischen Kreisen. Penrose war fasziniert von der Philosophie und Ästhetik der Gruppe und begann selbst Kollagen zu erstellen. Dabei verwendete er die Frottage-Technik, die ihm Max Ernst beigebracht hatte. In den 1930er Jahren begann er damit, zeitgenössische Künstler zu fördern und finanzierte surrealistische Projekte von Max Ernst sowie den Film Public Affairs (1934) des französischen Regisseurs Robert Bresson. Penrose startete seine eigene Sammlung mit einem Werk von Pablo Picasso.Peter Ade (1913-2005) war seit 1950 Geschäftsführer der Ausstellungsleitung und Direktor des Hauses der Kunst. Er organisierte Ausstellungen mit einem Schwerpunkt auf die Klassische Moderne, aber auch kulturhistorische Themen. Ade organisierte ab 1955 nach amerikanischem Vorbild einen Mäzenatenkreis des Hauses der Kunst aus Industrievertretern.
