Certifies that William Handy of Guilford served in Col. Baldwin's Regiment of Artificers for three years as part of Guilford's quota. Dated in 1782 and signed by two Selectmen, Increas Pendelton and Nathaniel Hall. Curiously, Handy along with three others was the subject of a letter written by Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull, Sr. to George Washington, attempting to extricate them from service because they had been underage when induced to enlist in Baldwin's Regiment, after they had been promised they would be taught the shoemaker's trade, but instead it was a regiment of artillery mechanics. It seems that Handy, at least, persisted.
