Copy 34 of 40, printed on Nepalese chapri paper, bound in a grey card cover and glued into a wrapper of red paper, paper title-label to the front. A most unusual and successful book, the subject being the early twelfth-century font in St Mary's Church Burnham Deepdale, Norfolk which is carved with designs representing the twelve months. The illustrations in red and descriptive notes by Samuel Pegge (from 'Observations on an antient font at Burnham Deepdale in Norfolk', 1790) and various other authorities listed after the appendix are on the main pages, then on interleaved half-pages are an introduction by Johnson followed by Pegge's main 'observations' text. Extremely scarce. Near Fine (very slight fade to spine), with the small discreet blind-embossed stamp of Dr Trevor Weston to the corner of the rear cover.

Originally written in a letter from Samuel Pegge the Younger, an English antiquary, poet, musical composer and lexicographer who was the son of Samuel Pegge the Elder and their work is frequently intertwined. Edited by Henry Christmas, an English clergyman, a man of letters and editor of periodicals. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with light wear and bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Small splits in the cloth to the head and tail of the spine with further splits to the joints. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting and minor age toning to the extremities. Very Good. book.
