Cada capítulo tiene la ambició…n de trascender lo aparentemente anecdótico, elevándose hasta la categoría para reflexionar sobre asuntos de cierto calado en torno a la lengua de todos: la norma y el uso, la variabilidad en el léxico y la fraseología, la huella que un individuo concreto puede dejar en su idioma, el desarrollo de las familias de palabras, los retos de lo que podríamos llamar la 'etimología fraseológica' -¿cómo y por qué ha surgido un dicho?-, el 'léxico familiar', las miserias de la filología -consecuencia de lapsus y erratas-, los complejos problemas del género gramatical, el purismo -y sus parientes: misoneísmo, alarmismo-, el presunto empobrecimiento del vocabulario, la vida de las palabras -nacimiento, muerte, resurrección-, el panhispanismo, los calcos, las creaciones expresivas, la lexicalización de elementos no léxicos. . . En los ensayos de este libro se adoptan posturas de tolerancia y de cierto relativismo en materia normativa; mas, aun situándose un poco a contracorriente, no cae el autor en el laxismo del 'todo vale'. Son mayoría los que están relacionados con el vocabulario, pero también los hay de tema gramatical, y otros se ocupan de problemas ortográficos, discrepando en ocasiones, con denodado afán razonador, de ciertas decisiones de la Academia. Un libro que Manuel Seco califica en el prólogo como 'singularísimo'.
